Hahaha Thank you I think? I’m finding varying reports, but tbh I’m not expecting too much! (Something about not being disappointed!) The changes to my body temperature and hot flushes have felt extreme… So. Much. Sweating. (& I’m in the southern hemisphere where the weather is getting colder, but not me 🥵 ha!)

I’m definitely no expert, but being an old machine I think the best thing to do is to get it serviced by a professional (sorry I don’t know how many big Mac’s that will cost), but it should be a good investment. From what I understand those old Singer sewing machines are great workhorses. Hopefully others will comment who know more than I do, but personally I’d get it serviced. Good luck!!

Try the ABC and SBS for more balanced coverage of issues. Whilst The Guardian skews left / progressive, it has excellent journalism and they also have a daily podcast (mon-fri) that looks into a particular story each episode, as well as a weekly(?) Podcast about politics where they discuss current issues.

I’ve found Evelyn Wood 's videos on YouTube really informative and helpful. Also, depending on what you want to sew, some independent pattern companies have really good pattern instructions that are beginner friendly. Some will also have videos to go along with it too. There’s lots of sewing stuff on the internet, whether it be basic instructions, free patterns etc etc. Lots of resources!

I’m a newbie sewist, and this week I finally sewed with jersey fabric!!! It was just a simple dolman sleeve top, but I feel I’ve overcome a mental hurdle because it turned out fine!! Now at some stage I have a jumpsuit to attempt in the same fabric…

The only thing I would say is that if it’s for a baby, maybe don’t use wool or yarn for the ‘hair’… It might be better to make it ‘solid’ out of satin like the fins? (Does that make sense? Like something in one mass rather than stringy…)?

I think the machine you have is a Brother Super Flairmatic 190B sewing machine. (I used Google lens on the picture you posted). If you search this on Google, you’ll find quite a bit of information, and there’s even a YouTube video!!! You might even be able to find a manual this way. Good luck!!!

I’m only a beginner, and I don’t really know, but I wonder whether it’s worth contacting a sewing machine servicer / repair person to take a look at it (do you know whether the electrics are good and working?). The other thing is a sewing machine repair person may have spare parts for vintage machines? Do you have the sewing machine manual?

Personally, I would try to find the same fabric for another tier… Or if not, perhaps a patterned fabric that has that same colour in the pattern (if that makes sense… ) 🤔 Not sure about white … A plain white tier might be too much of a contrast? (But that could also just be my aesthetic preference haha 🤷‍♀️, because the skirt looks really good with the top you’re wearing )
