  • As I said, that’s how Dark worked and Netflix took on 1899 knowing that. They knew it was supposed to be a trilogy, just like Dark. They knew it would be a mystery, just like Dark.

If they didn’t agree with that then they should have either a) not taken the project on, or b) made it absolutely clear to the writers that there was a high chance it would be cancelled after season 1 and to write it accordingly.

The expense part is purely on Netflix’s head. They wanted to invest in new technology and used 1899 as their reason/showcase. The writers couldn’t have cared less if it was a green screened boat or some weird 3D set.

Perhaps things would have been different if they had kept it in German (and in that branch of Netflix) rather than forcing it international, who knows. Let it perform accordingly for their local audience and then any international viewers are a bonus, god knows the majority of the English speaking world has zero interest in subtitles. Different cultures have different expectations from their programmes, and let’s face it, the American one is for the majority one of minimal effort and instant gratification.

  • 1899 suffered from this too, although in really it never really stood a chance against Netflix’s “fuck you” approach to shows.

They KNEW exactly what they were getting with 1899 due to it’s predecessor Dark. Dark was a slow burn that became immensely popular over time, and 1899 followed the same formula. But no. Netflix demands that shows be binged by half of their viewer base in the first week or it’s history.

1899 was written as a trilogy, the same as Dark. A complex story that would unravel over 3 seasons. Now 1899 sits on a shelf as one season with a fuck ton of unanswered questions. The poor writers were heartbroken (as was the fan base)

    Yes I’m bitter, fuck Netflix.

  • Ahhh it’s a lot easier to learn through immersion if you live there ;)

(A Brit who has lived in two other countries). I’m well aware of the resources on the internet. I’m also aware of the fact that this issue with the signs has bugger all to do with language barrier and everything to do with the people visiting being ignorant and inconsiderate tourists.

You are better off brushing up on the culture than you are the language. Simply looking at the sign through your phone camera would automatically translate it for you - yet another internet resource ;)

  • For shits and giggles I’m going to list the countries I’ve travelled to:

France, Spain, Greece, Austria, Italy, Finland, UAE, Dubai, Qatar, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Philippines, Palau, Malaysia, Indonesia - then Australia, US and Canada which don’t count for this I guess. I’m possibly missing one or two, I’m tired.

So, I’m supposed to have learned the language, and respective writing systems, of each of these places before going there?

I guess I should just quit my job and take up learning language full time…. Either that or just stay at home so that I don’t get ridiculed for being an ignorant tourist.

  • Yep, I came here to point this out but you beat me to it.

Our humour is often referred to as “dark”, but in reality we have simply internalised it like the rest of our emotions and have replaced it with pure unadulterated sarcasm and incredulity.

  • I was planning on continuing my sorc even if they didn’t get any buffs because I enjoy the play style.

After the patch was live I entered a NM dungeon using the lowest sigil I had on me. I didn’t even complete the first objective. It was a complete bloodbath.

I might just stack defensive stats everywhere with a sprinkling of thorns so that I can stand and cry in a corner until people smarter than me can figure out if any of the gems make us semi-useful.

God knows our new “unique” doesn’t offer any hope. It actually provides us with a refreshing new way to die, teleport roulette!

Ultimately, I don’t know. I’ll probably slam my head against the wall with a chain-lightning sorc for a while like I’ve been doing since release. I’m a stubborn cow and I (stupidly) live in hope of a miracle.

Maybe I need to just ignore all of the paragon boards apart from the two lightning ones and just fill every single node. There’s some kind of big brain Da Vinci code shit in there somewhere, there must be…. Some kind of cheat code that makes sorcs not suck. It will be my mission to find it.

  • I don’t necessarily agree with the builds thing if you are purely playing solo. As long as things are dying at a rate you’re happy with then that’s fine - you only really notice it when you are doing helltides and a wandering Druid obliterates everything in the blink of an eye.

I started off following a build (I play sorc) but I really didn’t enjoy the play style. I ended up doing my own thing and it’s turned out alright. I’m 95 now and I’m grinding NM at 48-50 because apparently going higher is pointless, general trash dies instantly/quickly in most cases, and I can still kill the butcher. I could kill things faster but I’d have to ditch a load of defensive stats and I’m already being one shot by random ranged mobs - but that’s the life of a sorc I guess.

I’ll look at guides later on when people have figured things out a bit better. Sorc guides seem a bit half-arsed atm because let’s face it, no one is playing sorc lol.

Plus… I’m totally getting some buffs today which will change everything, right…? Right…?

Please can I have some buffs? ._.

Aside from that, I completely agree, nothing explains how the game works which is frustrating and you absolutely need game guides. I was taking the scenic route through the campaign and then around level 30 I was thinking “when do I get that damn horse…” I thought it would be kinda like wow I guess, you hit a certain level and someone chucks a quest at you for your mount. Then I looked it up and discovered you need to get through a big chunk of the campaign, that pissed me off. Could have had the damn horse ages ago.
