I believe in order to go there directly using a url someone has to have searched for it at least once. For example, I tried going to https://midwest.social/c/cyberdeck@lemmy.ml and got a 404. Then I searched for it and it works after the search.
Yeah, this is not intuitive at all; i only figured it out after asking too. The 404 page for URLs that look like they could be remote communities should probably offer to try to import/federate that community.
