    Not shown: hijackings. 78 in 1970 alone. Single digits per year since 2003.

    But fuck planes, anyway. Preventing hijackings doesn’t mean it has to be so unpleasant.

      Hijackings back then were also not the same as what we think of as hijackings. Nowadays our idea of what happens is coloured by 9/11 whereas most of those highjackings before, while unpleasant, weren’t deadly for most of the people involved. When the majority of highjackings just lead to the plane being diverted to Cuba it isn’t such a big deal, but after the idea of using them as weapons got out people decided it was time to clamp down.

      Also fuck planes, high speed rail can and should replace overland routes

        But I saw a documentary about train hijacking called Under Siege 2. Luckily the day was saved when a whispery voiced man grabbed the hijackers by the wrist and they breakdanced into unconsciousness.
