If there’s anything about this part of our history that needs to be preserved, it’s what fucking losers the Confederates were. We should be celebrating Confederate L day as a holiday, though it might be overshadowed by Lincoln’s assassination just 5 days later on April 14. I don’t think I ever realized or thought about how close together those two events were, I just assumed it was some longer amount of time after the war concluded.
Also, the Wikipedia page on this time period notes that the inventor of Coca-Cola was a Confederate Colonel (John Stith Pemberton) who became obsessed with pain-killers, which is why he ended up making Coca-Cola (which had cocaine in it originally).
Lincoln was pen pals with Marx, probably the most progressive president in our history, though sadly his time was taken up with stopping the slaver traitors. Imagine what he could have done if the bastards hadn’t killed him.
