I think “raise a great hue and cry” predates our boy Leon and may be a Shakespear thing.
Forms of the term “hue and cry” date from at least the 13th century and are first encountered in the Anglo-French legal documents of that period.
I hath drawn thee as a chaste hwelp
lo I hath drawn mē selfum as a strang hund
hue and cry about it lubberwort
go thee to the grave still enraged
Wilt thou bawl as a babe? Wilt thou wet thy breeches, perchance? Mayhap soil and spill seed?
See, cope and seethe is as old as the English language. It’s a very important thing to say to someone.
“nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo”
“Hue and cry. Die mad about it.”
leon trotsky invented the term “cope and seethe”, rendering debate impossible
Aside from it not being his coining, it’s rich to see him try to drop a “cope and seethe” about a decade into his career of being a professional cope and seether just before finally being put out of his misery
Same energy as making it seem like Trotsky invented armored trains and the word racism
As Red Emma succinctly said : methinks Trotsky complains too much
