Ah yes, of course. We must understand and accept those who have chosen to not understand and accept human nature.

    Get fucked.

It’s also human nature (supposedly) for humans to be at war and murder each other. Let’s all understand and accept those people too /ffs

Human beings are not designed to be around death. Taking a life damages a person. War is not a consequence of human nature, it’s a consequence of the world we live in. Human nature mitigates this force and allows us to live in peaceable groups if we so choose, rather than doing all violence all the time.

And human nature would be enough to stop nearly all wars, were it not for egregores which are inhuman in nature.

At first I thought there may be merit to the point. Understanding ignorance-based intolerance is the first step toward changing opinions with education. Then I read the article.

In the next paragraph, his declaration says that “those who do not identify with, celebrate or support Pride celebrations… nevertheless share the experience of being marginalized.” His declaration goes on to say, “In Utah, we love our children and we hope to live in such a way that our children will forever love us even if at times we may disagree over deeply-held personal views or beliefs.”

      Nope. Fuck that guy.

I swear to god conservatives are such fucking babies. Literally any kind of consequence for their objdctively horrible and misinformed actions actions and they cry the biggest booboo tears.

Agreed. Their arguments are always self-centered. “We’re marginalized too.” “All lives matter.”

Give it a rest. This isn’t about you.

God that sounds awful in headline form.

Pride month is absolutely not an excuse to say “current homophobes will never get better, so they all need to blah blah”. Their current behavior is intolerable, but through continued exposure and humanizing influences, the people can be reached. It’ll go from hatred to extreme discomfort to mild discomfort to … something more normal.

Unfortunately I’m a crappy communicator and I can’t figure out a way to reduce that to a headline without making it some kind of division-promoting reductionist garbage. Sigh.

The nuance is what’s important, but also impossible to appropriately abbreviate as you said. All I’ve got is this:

I guess this guy never heard about Popper and the paradox of tolerance :

If a society’s practice of tolerance is inclusive of the intolerant, intolerance will ultimately dominate, eliminating the tolerant and the practice of tolerance with them.

It’s a social contract. If they want to opt out of the contract they don’t receive the tolerance it offers.

The right to hold a bigotted opinion should NOT superceed my right of self expression. You want to be a homophobe? Fine, but keep it to your fucking self and let’s the gays exist.

It’s ok to be biased against people for what they choose. Nobody chose to be attracted to whom they are attracted.

I understand homophobia but I don’t understand why they expect me to accept them shoving it in my face constantly. Can’t they keep their homophobic thoughts in the bedroom? Why do they have to make it their entire personality? Two men or two women kissing is totally natural, please keep your homophobia away from me and my imaginary children please.

I’m not a fan of this guy, but let’s give credit where it’s due. The article headline is trying to rile us up for clicks. It took his comments about “building bridges to bring both sides together” and accused him of encouraging acceptance of homophobes. Aren’t there plenty of bigots out there to fight without twisting “building bridges” into “accepting homophobes?” Aren’t we better than this?
