Ex-president determined to destroy independence of justice department if he regains control of White House

Donald Trump is planning an assault on the American justice system should he win re-election to the White House, in which he would seek to destroy the independence of the justice department and turn it into an attack machine for his Make American great again (Maga) movement.

At the heart of his plans is the desire to impose his will on the individual prosecutorial decisions taken by the Department of Justice. The move, if successful, would end half a century of accepted practice that prevents presidents from politically interfering with specific cases.

It would allow Trump in his second term to eradicate the federal prosecutions currently being pursued against him as well as against insurrectionists who stormed the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 whom he has championed as “hostages”. It would also free him to instigate legal investigations as acts of revenge against his perceived political enemies, including Joe Biden and family.

“I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family,” Trump said last year.

I know basically saying this is some Nazi Germany style shit always turns into hyperbole, and isn’t taken seriously. This is the kind of shit that leads to genocides and authoritarian nations

Hate to give him such credit but he’s shaping up to be even more brilliant than Hitler was. Hitler rode the wave of real economic strife (700% rise in prices) while Trump is riding a wave of ignorance.

He’s also got his cronies on the state level beefing up the police departments while limiting civilian oversight, similar to Mussolini’s beginnings.

He’s serving up a fascist combo platter.

We had a good 20 years or so where the internet helped reduce ignorance, but somehow we lost all that ground and more.

Russia and other authoritarian states realized what a boon for disinformation the internet was and wrecked it starting with the 2016 election.

This thing specifically remind me of the corruption the USSR / Russia has struggled with for decades.

The corrupt politicians staff the justice system with people who rule in favor of the corrupt politicians and their cronies. If you investigate the people / party that appointed you, you’re out.

The US has never gone full-Russia, but Trump wants to do that. Previously the rich and powerful have simply been able to get a leg up because they were able to outspend the justice dept. Under Trump, the justice team will be on the same team as the people they should be prosecuting.

So the DoJ is Joe Bidens puppet and he’s using it to persecute Trump for *checks notes* failing to turn over classified documents? Not insurrection or treason? Embezzlement? Russian collusion? Campaign finance violations? If every single indictment is a farce, why not drum up murder charges so he’s guaranteed to serve time?

I suspect we’re generally in agreement about all this, but … Trump was, in fact, also indicted in federal court (in DC) over his role in the insurrection. And his recent conviction in NY was related to his campaign finance violations (the payments to Michale Cohen for Stormy Daniels were to benefit his campaign but not reported to the FEC as such, making the alteration of business records the cover-up of a crime).

He’s totally going to get away with it, isn’t he?

If he does get elected (god forbid, from a jail cell), I’m taking a long walk off a short pier.

Would have to do some swimming, the waters close to the coast are still under US law. You need to get 12 nautical miles to get to international waters and away from this lunacy.

Or we can all band together, buy a used carnival ship, load it up with supplies, make sure it has wifi for everyone to be able to work, then just live out at sea for a while

The coup marches on. He’s trying to person himself out his crimes, and then establish his dictatorship.
