It’s a new week, which means a new general discussion thread. As the summer season is under way in earnest this week, here is your chance to talk about anything you want anime-related, even if it has nothing to do with the new shows. I have mostly been on vacation this past week, so I am going to live somewhat vicariously through your comments.
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
There was a lot of news this past week due to Anime Expo happening. It has been some time since I last went to a major anime convention of any kind (basically since I was in grad school). My local convention (Anime Boston), has grown tons over the years.
When I last went, probably 10 years ago, it was clear that it had pretty much reached the capacity of the convention center they use. However, they continue to cram everybody into that same space every year. If they ever move up to the bigger convention center in town (where PAX East happens) I might give it another shot. Part of why I haven’t been back is because it was so crowded that there wasn’t anywhere to have any downtime.
Anyway, diversion aside, I haven’t been able to watch too much this past week. Largely because I have been on vacation and the hotel internet is truly awful. What I have been able to watch was due to me abusing some local bar/restaurant wifi while having dinner to transfer some files from a server at home to my phone, then transfer those locally to my laptop to watch after my wife is asleep (she goes to be much earlier than I do). It’s a mess, but it kinda got the job partially done. I have a newfound appreciation for my fiber connection at home from this trip.
Just completed Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
It’s one of those shows that I’ve always heard rave reviews about, but never bothered to watch because the synopsis did not interest me.
But once I watch shows like these, I’d wish I have watched it earlier.
Madoka series + Rebellion movie
The game-like, checkpoint style of time rewind in the Madoka series reminds me of Edge of Tomorrow and Re:Zero. However, it actually came out before them, and executed the concept so well too!
The story-telling is superb, and soundtracks are amazing. But the best parts are the plot twists.
It is so good, it is now part of my all-time favourites. 10 / 10
Incidentally, Magical Girls is now my top-rated genre, at a 100% on my AniList profile. Granted, it is due to selection bias plus a small sample size, comprising just Madoka, The Demon Girl Next Door and Gushing over Magical Girls. I found it interesting as I certainly did not expect it. Perhaps I should watch a few more Magical Girls shows…
Just picked up ** The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies **
It’s giving off the same vibe as **Mr. Villain’s Day Off **

The episode requests are done via private message instead of mentions. It is the episode screenshots that use the mentions.
This time I went ahead and created the thread here.
Thanks; gotta figure out how to PM others on Lemmy😅
Edit: got it; gotta click on a user first to view their profile, then send a message from there
So Crunchyroll removed the comments section from their platform. Such a waste, it was cool to see how the comments evolved week to week depending on the show quality, especially the shitty ones.
I sympathize with this. However, I guess one of the contributing factors to this decision was an influx of hate speech in the comments. If CR doesn’t want to invest in enough moderators to keep the comments free of that kind of thing, then I would prefer no comments at all and those discussions to move elsewhere that are more actively moderated. MAL, AniList, reddit, and in a much smaller volume, this community are all outlets that have active discussions and active moderation. I am sure there are others as well. TBH, I am not super plugged into the social side of anime other than this community, so there are likely plenty of other social venues.
tl;dr - a few bad people ruin nice things for everybody
- Anime Corner - Full Results - Weekly Winner: Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
- Reddit Karma - Weekly Winner: Mushoku Tensei
Credit to /u/Abysswatcherbel for making the chart for reddit karma.
Due to where exactly they draw the cutoff line between weeks, Mushoku Tensei hung on to win the past week over on reddit while not being eligible for the AC chart. Of the new shows for the summer, Oshi no Ko and Alya were top two, but in a different order. Other summer shows placing well include Pseudo Harem and Days With My Stepsister.
We will see how things shake out with more summer shows getting their start over the next week. Will we all become deer?
