Or is the GOP too far gone to ever be civilized again? Not to leave out the name calling and bringing their kids into it too.

It’d still be extremely low brow and, if you weren’t aware, Nikki Haley is actually a lot worse on most issues than Trump - she’s not going to openly grift from the oval office but she’d struggle in a general election because she’s out and proud about her extremely restrictive views on abortion and regulations.

I can’t see the GOP as it is now going with her or any woman. Or really anyone but Trump, as he has opened the doors to allow them to be more of what they are. I get what the question is looking for, but the alternate history to lead to something like that would have diverged a long time ago with a very different now.

Mostly jelly wresting, pillow fights, wet t-shirt contests and bikini carwashes I imagine.

Eh, I suspect that the misogyny that the GOP is infested with would make it pretty low brow, but might avoid some of the specifics by Haley herself.

Things have gone off the rails, and until/unless the GOP purges the extremists from its ranks, we won’t see a campaign that doesn’t end up with the kind of absurd nastiness that trump brought about.

Mind you, there has always been a low brow element in American politics, it just wasn’t as visible until the internet came around. Trump is just the jackass that completely ignored civility and gave permission for the worst elements to throw off their disguises and spew their worst.

I can remember being in jr high and hearing idiot kids calling each other dummycrats and republibums. This was in the eighties. None of them were smart enough to have come up with that by themselves (despite how stupid it is, these were utter morons), so they had to have picked it up somewhere, which was probably from relatives, and probably older relatives. So the brainless stuff is at least as old as me, and I was born in the seventies.

It is very hard to get the worms back into the can once spilled. People get a taste of not having to filter their thoughts, they tend to not be willing to go back. Which isn’t limited to politics, btw.

Two women vying against each other? Regardless of political ideology, the men would create a hellstorm of bullshit beyond anything else. The candidates views and speaches would be drowned out by male commentary galore.

It’d be a gargantuan mess and no-one would really know what was actually going on, decades later even.

    Yay misogyny.

Kamala would still be great like now but on the other side it sure would improve things if they had a candidate which was not a rapist, felon and worse.

Just going to use this as a place to point out that there aren’t just two sides. Well, if you want to say it’s the Republicans against everyone, maybe, but the two main parties don’t represent everyone.

But yeah, it would probably be less bad if trump went away.

    No.

Our political culture is the equivalent of an open dumpster that’s been hanging out in triple-digit heat all day.

99% of voters are going to vote Democrat or Republican no matter what, and the knowledge that you’re going to get most of the vote regardless of what you do creates little impetus for meaningful change.

Politics in this country have always been ugly. They always will be ugly.
