My dad I was already estranged from tried adding me on Facebook over covid. No, but OK I’ll let you observe maybe you’ll just check in curiously and leave me alone.

Within a week he commented on my post about how protestors wouldn’t be a problem if we shoot them. I block him, my aunt chides me for blocking family over “politics.”

This isn’t a funding disagreement, this is moral. I don’t want that person in my life, IDGAF who it is.

It makes all the difference WHAT we disagree on. Want to discuss what the tax rate should be? Fine. Want to discuss how we should use our military? Ok.

But, I’m not discussing if women should have agency over their body. I’m not discussing if we should elect criminals. I’m not discussing if queer people should be treated equally. I’m not discussing if Nazis are good people. Get fucked hard. These issues are not up for debate. And it’s the reason calling yourselves a republican makes me immediately think of you as an asshole.

Maybe in the past you could hide behind small government bullshit but since Trump, the mask has come off.

I just got through the first season of the show and they actually tackle that lie. Mostly through the eyes of the commander’s wife. As the men expect her, and all women, to give up her position of influence without rancor and still be a loyal member of the movement. The men are completely mystified about any reluctance to do so.

Any time someone says something like, “I would strip you of your rights, but we can still be friends”, they’re just buying your passivity until they can do it. And after it’s done they won’t recognize any grievance with it because to them you silently consented to it.

Funny how they love screaming this shit at me but were quiet when my best friend from highschool I still hung out with at 30 went off the deep end and stopped talking to me over “silly, childish” takes such as checks notes

I receive healthcare from the VA and can see my doc, get blood work, xrays, and meds in one day with no paperwork or sliding scales or loopholes and I think it’d be pretty cool if everyone could enjoy that efficiency.

This is a microcosm for the greater issue: we have 2 groups of people living in the same country who continue to become further and further alienated from one another. Democracy cannot function when people no longer believe that their opponents are acting in good faith. It’s a prelude to secession or civil war.

And, when there’s concrete evidence that a faction has not been acting in good faith for half a century at the least?

Neither faction is acting in good faith. I’ve seen plenty of folks on both sides who simply want to kill the other side. That is not conducive to constructive politics!
