Finished up the Dressrosa arc in One Piece, and might take a little break to do some fall/spooky stuff.
Any scary/spooky/ghostly/weird/unsettling anime you like to go with this season? I think the only thing I need to get ahead of is that I didn’t care for Ghost Stories after a few episodes.
You could watch this Hyouka clip on loop
Seriously though, I’m not really a rewatcher, but here are some possibilities:
- Psycho-Pass
- Made in Abyss (pretty much all the CWs for this anime, it’s definitely not for everyone, but I think it’s incredibly well done for what it is)
- Higurashi
- Death Parade (not entirely sure if this fits, but it’s great and you should watch it)
- Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (premise: a zombie apocalypse is preferable to the soul-crushing experience of being a Japanese salaryman)
- Mononoke (HIGHLY recommend this one, really incredible art style)
- Mushishi
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica (perhaps this one’s too obvious to mention, but it’s popular for a reason)
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Season 1 (it’s got vampires!)
- Perfect Blue (movie, psychological horror)
- Serial Experiments Lain (not horror, but definitely unsettling and strange)
Out of everything I mentioned, I think the only one that both fits the prompt precisely and that I highly recommend is Perfect Blue. Higurashi’s an acquired taste (wasn’t really for me tbh), but it’s also very much in the spirit of the season. Made in Abyss is excellent and definitely horrifying, but also goes too far for a lot of people–definitely do your research before you watch this one. All the rest are just good shows in general that I’d recommend to anyone, so feel free to check them out at your leisure!
edit: added MAL links
Totally loved JoJo, but the rest are all stuff I haven’t heard of! With the exception of Mononoke - do you mean the movie Princess Mononoke?
Nope, it’s a show that’s just called Mononoke! Probably should have made a note of that since the Ghibli film is obviously the more well-known work.
Rock on, will check it out!

Hellsing is fun if you like gory vampire murder
That is one I’ve seen before, but could stand to rewatch - it’s been a NUMBER of years. Ultimate or original? Think the one I watched was Ultimate.
It’s also been a few years since I’ve seen it, but iirc original is quick and basic 13 episode series that wraps up the story at the end, Ultimate is longer and gets into the weirder parts of the manga, with a Nazi catboy etc.
Reject Japan and enjoy the glory of Over the Garden Wall, the greatest thing Cartoon Network did in the past decade.
Obviously lots of great spooky anime recommendations here (esp. Higurashi), but I think if we’re thinking Spooky Season (and Fall, and all its loaded associations), nothing embodies it better than Over the Garden Wall. You have harvest, you have the cold, you have halloween - it’s perfect.

Shiki
Watched that last Halloween due to Hexbear recommendation. It’s got a classic gothic detective story thing going on as it builds up. It’s quality, but be warned it’s pretty gutwrenching. Line up something warm and cozy to watch after.
The Cowboy Bebop movie is set during Halloween
Did you watch Ghost Stories with the original English gag dub?
Yes
Angel’s Egg is dark and moody. It meanders between placid and tense with dread. It can certainly be unsettling
