Recent research found that DMT-induced mystical experiences are linked to a rare balance between stress and relaxation systems in the body, which predicts spiritual insights during the experience and improved well-being two weeks later.
“In essence, DMT-induced ‘mystical’ experiences appear to manifest in the body as an unusual state of coactivation of cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic activity,” Bonnelle said. “Not only was this paradoxical physiological state of peaceful activation strongly related to spiritual and insightful experiences, but it was also predictive of well-being improvement after the experience. Our results also suggest that practices that promote the cultivation of balance between the two branches of the autonomic nervous system may facilitate the occurrence of such a state.”
I’d be curious to see what the effects are after a bad trip. You see it with mushrooms and acid, where someone benefits from a good trip but can have lingering side effects from a bad one.

I would further keep in mind that large scale studies of controlled substances is very difficult.
Very small… Only 17 participants.
Very small. In fact, the test subjects happened to have the same names as the researchers. What a coincidence.
