If that is not American “coming-of-age” ™ red cup, I’ll be damned - made of non-recyclable plastic, flashy in color, and screams teens trying hard to be tough adults. Let’s also not forget the complementary ping-pong-and-drink-alcohol game, and the bully-nerd fight near the swimming pool. That’s literally every Zac Efron movie.
In my experience the red cups were used for mixed drinks being served by amateur bartenders (or jungle juice), or for kegs, or for drinking games. The latter was by far the most common - beer pong, slap/stack cup, etc. Often, people would rinse and reuse them to cut on waste and/or cost.
It has a lot to do with the 21 drinking age. Since getting alcohol is difficult without a fake ID or someone to buy it for you, you’re dependent on what’s at the party. Can’t bring your own case of beer because you’re 19 without a fake.
The host will get 1 or 2 kegs and make some jungle juice in a big cooler, again because they’re probably under 21 so it’s easier to buy only 2 types of alcohol

…solo cups have been square for fifteen years; not pictured above…
E)
Have you considered that these are not SOLO © branded plastic cups? I don’t think Top/Bottom/Switch was social media discourse prior to 2009 when SOLO © switched to their square cups.

I have never once seen these at a party, that being said I also partied with crust punks and dirt bags, you drink from the bottle
They are very very common at fratty college/university parties
Why don’t people use the cans or bottles as they are like normal people do in every other country?

Usually they’re used when there’s either a keg or some sort of shared mixed drink/punch.
Or for drinking games.
If you need a cup for a mixed drink you get a fucking coffee mug from the kitchen cause it’s not made of glass. I am anti red cup gang as well.
lmao soooo many mugs at british parties, that or stolen beer glasses from the local pub
Going and getting cups for a party is a lot more planning than has gone into most parties I’ve attended.
There’s usually a crate of beer in the washing machine because people think it’s a good place to hide their stash so it doesn’t disappear too quickly.
I don’t really get the purpose unless everyone is having mixed drinks. Alcohol comes in a container already.
it’s this one, and the “mixed drinks” is just jungle juice
Imagine but it’s just the Malibu, vodka, and pineapple juice.
Fucking rich kids.
College dorm special:
Like egg1918 said it’s mostly a drinking age thing. This stuff disappears outside of the high-school and early college scene.
My social circle was more about going together to get 40s from 7/11 and smoking/drinking shit beer around a fire.
They’re for the kegs of beer and large containers of premixed drinks
Yeah, I was more everyone brings a case of beer and drinks their case of beer kinda thing.

That makes sense
