Remember when Silvio Berlusconi lied, cheated, raped and stole his way through public life, gaining wealth and fame, dying at the ripe age of 86 without facing justice and after having set the stage for even more extreme fascists to take over?

History shows that often, very often, the baddies just win.

On 1 August 2013, Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud by the Supreme Court of Cassation. His four-year prison sentence was confirmed, and he was banned from holding public office for two years. Aged 76, he was exempted from direct imprisonment, and instead served his sentence by doing unpaid community service.[10] Three years of his sentence was automatically pardoned under Italian law; because he had been sentenced to gross imprisonment for more than two years, he was banned from holding legislative office for six years and expelled from the Senate.[11][12] Berlusconi pledged to stay leader of Forza Italia throughout his custodial sentence and public office ban.[10][13] After his ban ended, Berlusconi ran for and was elected as an MEP at the 2019 European Parliament election.[3] He returned to the Senate after winning a seat in the 2022 Italian general election,[14] then died the following year from complications of chronic leukaemia, and was given a state funeral.[15]

Same thing happened to ancient Rome … wealthy people started controlling everything including the army and kept making more money for themselves at the expense of everyone … at one point there was so much lawlessness that the military and army realized that they could just kill / overthrow the emperor to get what they wanted … eventually the position of leader became meaningless as everyone started to just fight and kill for what they wanted.

Real talk for hope: the more complicated institutions fall first. That’s bad news for people depending on the coast guard, but good news for people who are attacked by the now paper dragon

Americans don’t have the sense of class solidarity to do that, they’re too busy being racist to one another.

      Divide and conquer.

That just means the groundwork of building a general strike will require building class consciousness, as well as building a support network for vulnerable people.

Speaking of France, the last use of the guillotine for an execution was in 1977. There are probably people reading this who were alive when it happened – it’s not too late to bring it back.

Was that one of the protests where they sprayed manure on buildings? Or stopped trash pickup? Or a different one? The French are glorious in their ability to protest.

Pretty much every protest in which farmers are involved includes spraying manure on government buildings. You don’t just not use the manure launcher if you have one.

And he did give them a better life. They ate him because it served the movie’s plot. Also wtf was mufasa doing to make all the land more sunny? Was it that whole circle of life thing where he gets to eat his subjects?

Exactly. If want to stay connected to reality we should use historical analogies only. Remember when Maduro promised Venezuelans a better life, but life just got shitty instead. And instead of eating Nicolás Maduro they ate out of trash bins.
