It’s Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene, and it’s very comparable to general “message” in information theory. “Internet memes” fit into his definition exactly.

It’s simply a term for any arbitrary amount of idea. Everything is a meme. Your argument is like saying “nothing has mass if you call everything mass”.
