Yesterday he signed a bill targeting abusive “troubled teen” facilities. Someone who will always be special to me was sent to one of these. They’re probably happy right now—that I’ll never know for sure doesn’t even matter.
I hope it has some effect. Those facilities are basically MKUltra child torture facilities, it’s absolutely horrifying. I learned about it through Trueanon’s series The Game as Brace also got sent to one

when i was 15 and suicidal, i was in a teen psyc ward unit at a christian hospital for a couple weeks. not exactly a torture facility, but the way some of the staff treated kids who didn’t fall 100% in line was ridiculous
we shared a common room TV with netflix, disney plus, etc, where anything worse than PG was banned, yet people were always breaking this rule (i guess they didn’t realize they could easily set age restricted profiles??)
one day, an obviously neurodivergent 13 yo girl was playing something PG-13, and refusing to turn it off when the staff lady confronted her. instead of deescalating, staff started raising her voice and arguing, and tried to forcibly grab the remote from her pocket. the girl was yelling and hiding under the table… so the staff’s next logical move was to call security, who forced her to swallow a sedative, then carried her body to lock her in the “quiet room.” they made us all go to bed an hour early as it was happening.
have a lot of stories from that place and it wasn’t all bad, but definitely were some times like that. i remember that lady being like, “you’re so quiet and behaved, i wish all these kids could be like that…” lady i had crippling anxiety disorder among other things, i wasn’t quiet because i was respected you
I read about this place. I’m shocked that it’s still allowed to be open. I’m hoping this might close it, but I’m probably hoping for too much.

Someone posted a link to this autobiographical comic about one of these schools on hexbear a while ago, I clicked on it an basically immediately spent the rest of the day finishing it. Completely horrifying and fascinating.
Content warnings for pretty much everything you’d expect from a true story about this incredibly abusive institution. Harrowing read.

a lot of it seems outlandish until you start reading other peoples accounts and realize that he is telling the truth. that is how that place was
Yeah this is one of the most horrifying pieces of media I’ve ever consumed, it really does need content warnings. This disturbed me far more than any horror movie, because everything in it is real.
I still think about it a lot.

The fucked up thing is the way they keep the kids from telling their family what is really happening to them. Like a fascist government, monitoring all correspondence, even when the family comes to see him, it’s totally 1. fake, coached things for him to say and 2. monitored at all times and can be ended at any time.
Every time I hear about any part of this system, I feel sick
