I am always surprised when I am reminded of people who use amphetamine meds off-label for weight loss, because even though I don’t have an appetite while I’m taking them, there’s always a few hours before bed after they wear off when I can’t stop myself from eating everything in the pantry.

    Unmedicated ADD here. I’ve stopped trying to control my binge eating so I manage it by only eating once a day right before bed. Not healthy mentally or physically but its the best I can do

    I found it was because I wasn’t eating when I was on the medicine. I had to make a conscious decision to put food in my mouth no desire no satisfaction. Otherwise I’d be absolutely starving when I started to come down. This was 40mg Ritalin LA at about a 175lbs 20 year old.

      I think that’s pretty common.

      It’s definitely a dopamine thing for me because it’s not just food. Some nights I’ll stay up late looking for a distraction that scratches that itch, even though I’m exhausted.

    Yeah, this happens to me. On ritalin lp it’s not that bad because it happens just before I actually go to bed, but whatever I was on before was awful for a few hours of constant snacking.

    The main thing I tried to keep in mind is that I’m not in any sense hungry (although it can feel like that) and that’s why having one more snack won’t stop the feeling (even if it feels good at the time). Instead, I’m craving simple sensation and easy dopamine so I try to replace the cravings for unhealthy snacks with alternatives.

    My cravings are for salty, crunchy things and that normally ends up in me eating bags of chips or crackers/toast and thick butter. But anytime I’ve had left over roast vegetables, that are a bit blackened and carmalised and well-seasoned I discovered that I’d just as happily eat a piece of roast cauliflower or carrot as a bread stick. the key is that they’re a satisfying texture and salty / spicy. If I just had a bag of carrot sticks I’d eat one or two then want something more intense and reach for the bag of tortilla chips.

    I’ve even had some success recently with crushed ice and a dash of lemon juice. With a cupful of tangy ice I can relax in the evening and keep reaching for another piece to cronch down on. And because it’s cold and hard it recreates that “I shouldn’t have more, I should wait, oh what the hell” that I get with snacks I’m “not allowed” and I think that the giving into temptation is itself a dopamine hit.

    This happens to me sometimes. But I attribute it to stress eating. The side effect of taking adderall was doing this less. I was doing this all the time because I was diagnosed. Now it’s less common for me but you’re not alone. I have the extended release version.

      The extended release version gave me more of the side effects and less of the benefits, unfortunately

      I think it’s the same dopamine-seeking behavior that’s exasperated by my poor health habits, and those have admittedly been really bad of late.

    I had to go into a partial psych care program because I literally was only eating like 1 meal a day, I was very underweight, and it was making the depression really bad because my body had nothing to work with. Even when the ADHD med wore off I had so little energy that I didn’t want to find food before bed. The psychiatrist ended up switching me from Vyvanse back to Adderall, and then a month later lowering my dosage of Adderall from 30mg to 20mg. I definitely feel like my ADHD is harder to manage, but it seems to be the happiest medium I’ve found for the moment.

    I’m not on a stimulant beside caffeine. But I have noticed a similar issue. 3 things I do to help:

    1. Plan for it. I intentionally plan for my meals to be larger as the day progresses so dinner is the biggest.
    2. I give myself “free” things to eat with no guilt. If I want to eat a giant bowl of cooked broccoli, no worries.
    3. Don’t buy things you will dopamine crave. If you have junk food at arms reach, you will eat it. I try to stick up on protein bars and fresh fruit.
