Anyone else feel like millennials/xoomers that refuse to use Tiktok are as out of touch as boomers that refused to try using the Internet? The sound almost exactly the same

I would hate to be that stubborn

Refuse to use tiktok”, seriously listen to yourself.

Tiktok is not some kind of new paradigm. It’s yet another social network, one with an annoying gimmick (that it didn’t even invent). A gimmick that makes it harder to do meaningful content and easier to have complete assholes as its superstars.

It’s just a shitty company offering a shitty product.

What are you talking about? TikTok isn’t the internet, just like Facebook wasn’t and MySpace wasn’t.

TikTok is like Snapchat. 13 years ago Snapchat was the cool app all the kids were using and making fun of older people for not getting it. 13 years later and it’s still just shitty text messaging, with the only people using it being those who cared a decade ago who got their family and friends to sign up just for them.

TikTok is just shitty Youtube and in 10 years will be replaced by something else. Plus, what exactly am I out of touch with? My reddit feed is already crammed with crappy TikTok videos. Take something mildly amusing with the volume off that would be moderately amusing with sound. Replace that sound with the most godawful music you can think of. Now repost it 100 times with the image cropped to oblivion and half the screen taken up by an emoji or some random mobile game. Woo yeah, that’s the future of content, let me tell you.

Are you equating a specific companies product with an overarching technology that allows generalized connections between people across the world?

TikTok aren’t even on the same scale… TikTok is part of the internet. TikTok is a very narrow usage of it. One based entirely on sucking people into addictive vapid content.

Every time some other social media pushes short form content on me, its just reposted tiktoks anyway and its all garbage. Why should I go straight to the landfill for content I don’t care for?

Because in that landfill is a beautiful little village of bat shit crazy people who use tik tok like it’s Facebook and have full detailed arguments with each other via short videos, it’s a joy sitting there and hearing all the dirty secrets of some stranger in a random ass small town.

I don’t care about the trends, I don’t care about the drama between creators, I want to know how many guys Mary slept with while Mary asks how’s Tina’s kids, oh that’s right cps took them away!

        I’m gonna miss that.

Nah soap operas aren’t as tasty as the shit on there, I’m talking like real insane people, not people who want to be tik tok famous, just insane people who don’t understand what the apps for… Crackheads basically, I love me some crackhead drama, they got no shame airing all their shit, it’s beautiful, soap operas wish they were half as entertaining as a good ol crackhead fight over tik tok.

            Nom Nom Nom so tasty!

Older millennial here. I don’t use TT because it’s old hat and it doesn’t interest me at all. Wasn’t into Vine, not into TT.

Also, there’s so many reposts on Lemmy and from my friends that I’ve never needed to download it.

I think it’s not that I’m refusing to use it, it’s more like I’ve never needed to in order to function and enjoy life.

      Probably same reason for Boomers.

Can you clarify? You’re saying you don’t currently want to try TT because you don’t think it’s existed long enough, and/or that you didn’t try it before because you didn’t think it would last that long?

Idk dude, the latter would literally be exactly what people said about the Internet. “It’s just a fad”, “it won’t go anywhere/be useful/last long”.

I mean, our ineffective af government was somehow able to rally bipartisan support against this very popular app that many Americans use to create/manage/advertise their businesses, one that is the only slightly left-leaning social media site and one that isn’t controlled by American oligarchs. But you still think it’s not important?

That’s fair. lol. Agree to disagree. They’re not coming for “us” at least!

No, I’m saying g TikTok is one of a number of fads that have come and gone over the years, it’s not really important. I’m not some Boomer ignoring the Internet, I’m a Millennial who remembers Vine.

It’s one platform. Among many. They come and go over the years. I’m not saying there aren’t important discussions to be had about TikTok, I’m just saying let’s not pretend it’s more than it is.

The Internet is persistent. Communities evolve. Platforms depreciate. Life goes on.

TikTok isn’t in any way left leaning. It still seeks to exploit people the same as any other business, they’re just better at it.

Lmao one social media site is not as much of a change in the human experience as going from no internet to internet was. I’ve seen every form of internet communication there’s been. TikTok is just not my preferred form of interfacing with the internet, it’s not that revolutionary, and like every other website or app it will fall out of vogue sooner or later

I’ve heard that it has innovative easy-to-use video editing software. I kinda wanted to try it out, but not badly enough to download and install it.

To be honest, I’m older cohort Gen Z, never used tiktok. I found that even fucking YouTube Shorts was too addicting, and didn’t like the effect it had on me. Eventually switched to using NewPipe and eventually ReVanced just so I could get rid of YouTube shorts.

I dunno, I get why people would refuse to use tiktok.

If you won’t try it then maybe that’s true. But I tried it, even gave it a full hour because it’s supposed to take 45 minutes for the algorithm to learn what you want to see, but even after an hour it was still showing me things i had little to no interest in.
