This has been going on for a couple months at least, but not much longer than that.

I have images set to open with paint.net (basically a ghetto version of photoshop, but free). Used to be if I select multiple images on the desktop or some folder and hit enter, each would open in its own tab in paint.net; but lately doing so is just setting them as a slideshow style desktop background. Desktop background is typically just a single image - slideshow is not enabled, but it turns itself on every time this image fuckery happens.

Any thoughts on how to get it back to normal?

Huh. One of my users recently needed help after seeing a photo as his desktop background.

He said he was opening images and one became his desktop background. I just thought it was user error and walked him through fixing it.
    Maybe it wasn’t…

yeah all those settings are where they need to be; and if I open one image at a time, it opens as expected. More than one… slideshow background Q_Q

Have you tried ensuring that paint.net is your default program for all of the various image file types? That might have something to do with it.

Yeah - it has been, and verified still is (the weird background thing isn’t changing that setting, but seems to just bypass it)

What’s your process for opening… are you holding the ctrl key and left clicking all of the images you want to open to select them, then right clicking one of the selected images and hitting open?

typically just left click and hold the space near an icon, drag to highlight the files I want, release click, then hit enter.

When I did this, the files opened in Photos, even though the default app is PDN… then I selected one image, right click open with, click choose another app (even though PDN is listed there the ‘always’ and ‘just once’ options are only on the ‘choose another app’ menu), then choose PDN from the other apps list, and click the always button. After doing this, it reset the behavior for opening multiple files in PDN using the method you described, selecting and hitting enter.

Weird that even though the default app was already set for the file type, I had to ‘remind’ windows by specifying always open with this program. The background thing is possibly due to something with the way themes works with the photos app.

Also, as with anything buggy in windows, make sure you are super up to date on updates, and restart your computer.
