I wouldn’t say we’re not censoring the indigenous genocide. Having worked in education as a researcher, I’d say most K-12 programs actively avoid the topic (in large part because textbooks tend to get approved first by Texas, then others follow–long story as to why. But suffice to say they don’t exactly like the dirty truth in Texas).
I guess that’s not censorship so much as indoctrinating the youth? Is that really better?
Is this a modern (past 20-30 years) trend, or did I just get insanely lucky with my school teaching us about stuff like the Trail of Tears as a kid?
We covered it heavily when I was in Texas public schools in the 90s.
I went to school in Oklahoma and we learned about the Trail of Tears and the burning of Black Wall Street. I don’t think they were highlighted like they should have been. It wasn’t visceral. But the facts were taught.
I can’t imagine that happening now there.
So the thing is this is mostly a matter of which texts your school purchases. Since the leader in purchasing (at least when I checked a few years back) was Texas’ board, publishers tend to prioritize what they require. There are usually alternatives and teachers have (or had?) some autonomy on this, but many are pretty neutral because why would you go out of your way to research these things?
Anyway, currently we also have an abundance of book banning and the politicalizarion of the PTA so it’s probably even worse right now. Also, Trail of Tears is like the token indigenous atrocity story, kind of like how a text will have 3 paragraphs on MLK to cover all of the civil rights movement.
That’s what I thought too re: it being a token thing, but my spouse who grew up in a blue state suburb didn’t even get that!

Of course, a memes a meme! At least college usually covers the truth as best it can, hence why folks like DeSantis are targeting universities mostly, not K-12. But as you say… for now.

They’re just all at happy fun camp and don’t want to talk to their killjoy families. All the media with families speaking out. Regardless of where it originates from. All made up by the CIA and anyone who covers it simply isn’t credible somehow. The YouTube maker from mainland China that I used to enjoy watching. Who had to abandon her career after telling her life story. Due to threats from the Chinese government . Which included her having to live as a boy because of China’s sexist one child policy. And who’s partner a transgender Uyghur. They don’t exist. I just imagined that they existed. And if they are being threatened by the government they deserve it. It’s got nothing to do with the government being bad. You should expect brain rot from ml enclaves

I am in a position where I could find minorities in my nation that were once in china, as well as survey individual Chinese people on their thoughts and opinions publicly
it’s believable for there to be a cultural genocide (as in, sinofication) and it occurs anywhere there is a government, a lack of autonomy and limited media coverage for their people (see Kurds in Turkey, Caucasian Minorities in Russia and Ossetians in Georgia)

Thank you for your commentary. There is 100% potential for posts like this to be tainted with bigotry (especially once comments get going) so clarification is vital.
I do take issue with you accusing me of doing “Both Sides.” My original goal was and remains just to improve the quality and accuracy of memes about the CCP; I was sick and tired of “Pooh Bear What Happened in Tiananmen Square lol” content which does tend to veer especially into the reductive, ignorant, and sometimes sinophobic.
In the past I have focused my efforts on improving memes regarding the atrocities in the US and Palestine, and am now simply wanting to do the same thing here. I welcome feedback on how I can clarify and improve my rhetoric but I am not just going to shut up.
