I’m having trouble finding information about the Wisconsin part of the national Project 2025 protest that’s scheduled for 2/5. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
The real protest was 11/5 but too many people missed it.
You’re right, of course.
I don’t believe the majority really wanted what’s happening now, but they did vote for it (or chose it by not voting). And they have no excuse for not knowing what the consequences would be. They were told very clearly, many times.
Now we’re here and need to do whatever we can.
I’m not sure about that. Denial is a very powerful thing. Like with climate change, or eating meat from industrial slaughterhouses, or ordering from Amazon, or using Facebook. A lot of people know in the abstract that what they’re doing is bad, but push that thought out-of-mind for any of various reasons. Mostly, because the system is big, change would require immense personal sacrifice, and it wouldn’t have any measurable impact on the system.
Lots of people know that they should pay attention to politics and vote, but it’s depressing, and there’s that same feeling that the system is way too big for their individual actions to have any impact. I feel that that explains a lot about the last election. That is, there was no option on the ballot that really felt like improving things, so a lot of people just used that same denial mechanism to ignore it. Other people who are paying attention would vote, surely.
They weren’t told the consequences clearly. Everybody who paid attention and knew where to look knew about them, but we had to look. The people in denial could easily avoid any of it without trying. Look at the reports of the people searching “did Joe Biden drop out” on election day.
Blaming them might feel righteous, but it’s not going to be useful for changing anything in the long run.
I think there is a difference between ignorance and willful ignorance, which is most of what we’re seeing now. Still, I know you’re right that it doesn’t do any good to tell people that. We’re here. How we got here is not the immediate problem.
All that I have seen are the nationwide virtual flyers created by the r/50501 community. Those say noon on the 5th at the state capitol. Nothing about whether anybody is organizing anything beyond that. Maybe just showing up is the important thing.
Now I see word that the Madison protest starts at 11AM.
Thank you!
I just finished reading an article on Snopes that does a good job of explaining what is known about the protest.
