Are there consequences for declaring someone dead mid-flight?

I wonder if there was somewhere else they could have put the body. I feel so bad for everyone involved.

I did a bit of digging… Apparently airlines don’t want to officially pronounce someone dead until they’re off the plane for liability sake.

If the family wants to sue, they can request an autopsy and determine the time/cause of death, of course. But airlines waiting until they’re off the plane adds another layer of friction in the process of pressing charges.

How awful for the families, in an already horrible situation.

Surely they could’ve allowed the couple to move for the remainder of the flight. With the empty seat next to them that means it wasn’t a full flight.

well, no, it wasn’t, but an empty seat next to them meant there was an empty seat next to them, not that there were other empty seats, it seems that the couple asked if they could change seats, which would seem to indicate there were other empty seats, but the couple may have just wanted to have other people take their seats instead of them

If the person died coming back from the bathroom there was at least one other empty seat. :)

If the deceased was travelling with anyone else, just move everyone around…

Forcing her traveling partner to sit next to her corpse would hardly be better.

True. I can’t imagine having that conversation at all, much less in an enclosed space like an airplane…

“Pardon me, are you travelling with (person)? About that…”
