Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Wednesday Japan will restart idled nuclear plants and consider developing next-generation reactors, in a policy reversal that will see the nation turn back toward atomic energy as fuel prices soar worldwide.
it’s been a rough decade for nuclear, but i’m glad to see most of the world community still recognize the utility of nuclear energy–and to a lesser extent the necessity of preserving the existing nuclear capacity of the world when it comes to achieving climate goals–if nothing else. it might not be cost effective to build more nuclear capacity at this point, but even with renewables booming shutting down nuclear plants that exist is almost always still replacing a carbon-neutral energy source with carbon-heavy sources.
