Netflix’s live action adaptation of the ultra popular pirate manga dropped on Aug 31!

It’s 8 episodes long covering the East Blue arc, with each being about an hour.

Have you watched it yet? What did you like or dislike?

    Watched the first episode.

I’m not tripping, it’s actually really good, right? Like some demented fusion of Pirates of the Caribbean and tokusatsu live-action (like Karmen Rider or something). The cast and the sets make everything really charming and fun, and Inoki’s take on Luffy is really carrying the show. That said, I haven’t watched the original to compare.

    Also, since this is relevant:

    Only watched one episode but…

Very incredibly obviously low budget, which begs the question “Why do we need to keep making live action versions of high fantasy anime?” Captain Morgan’s face prophetic and axe hand look like something Spirit Halloween produced on a rush order. Evil Dead was doing better than this on a college theater club budget 40 years ago.

But that’s fine. Whatever. I’ll keep eating this crap.

I’m more disappointed by the acting. Its… not great. I know I’m basically watching Power Rangers, but I was really hoping for more from Luffy ffs. The girl they got for Nami so clearly runs laps around everyone else on set. Shanks is solid. Zoro is good enough. But everyone else… Jesus Christ, you’re professionals. Act like it.

I really wanted to like this show because I’ve been flirting with One Piece since forever. But God damn do these live action adaptations disappointment me every time.

If you’re wanting to give One Piece a shot, the manga is far and away better than any adaptation, but if that’s not your thing you can check out the “One Pace” fan edit which has the goal of trying to make the anime more accurate and cuts out filler stuff.

I think Inaki does a good job of capturing Luffy’s energy, it’s really difficult to portray a character who’s personality is cheerful and carefree without making it super cheesy, although I think it went over the line a few times when combined with the dialogue and line reads they used.

I’ll give “One Pace” a shot. I’ve heard so much good stuff about this anime and I’d hate to miss it entirely.

I can’t really blame Inaki on this. It just feels like they didn’t do many cuts or spend much time in production.

Mostly why I don’t like these adaptations. They always seem rushed.

it’s fairly high budget, but most of that was spent on making sets and real sailing ships to film on. i thought the costuming was fine, the toku vibes work well with one piece as a world imo. luffy is honestly my favorite part, he’s a lot of fun and he’s doing his best to make the cartoon thing work in live action

One thing I do like so far: The SFX! CG doesn’t look awful and the fact that the fishmen look like they’re using prosthetics is super cool

One thing I don’t like so far: Garp’s character seems a little off to me. Much more calculating and professional than he is in the manga/anime.

I’ve only seen episode one, but the writing for him seems way off. I kept waiting for him to laugh or doze off, but he’s too much of a straight arrow so far.

So, I’ve watched and read the first bits of both the comic and the manga. Watched the first live action episode. Was kinda of primed by the impressions in this thread, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. I honestly liked the performances a lot, especially Luffy. The performances for Nani and Zora felt pretty baseline (not bad, but not outstanding), but I liked the energy that Inaki brought. The set design felt great, and while the costuming was kinda weird, I think it matches the mix of modern & early modern clothes from the original. The score is really fun as well.
