Ukraine president delivers upbeat message on war progress during second White House visit since Russian invasion
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy worked to shore up US support for Ukraine on a whirlwind visit to Washington on Thursday, delivering an upbeat message on the war’s progress while facing new questions about the flow of US dollars that for 19 months have helped keep his troops in the fight against Russian forces.
The Ukrainian leader received a far quieter reception than the hero’s welcome he was given last year from Congress, but also won generally favorable comments on the next round of US aid he says he needs to stave off defeat.
Remember in 2018 when several GOP senators spent the 4th of July in Moscow?
Remember when Trump described Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as “genius” and “savvy”?
Remember when Nick Fuentes said “Now they’re going on about Vladimir Putin and Russia, and Vladimir Putin is Hitler – and they say that’s not a good thing" while they chanted, “Putin, Putin”?
I’m not saying every dot connects, but I could read a horoscope or two in this constellation.
Man I want to believe our HUGE intelligence apparatus and community is all over this like flys on shit. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but the CIA losing a shot ton of US informants the same time Trump was president seems a little to convenient The Hill article Before any of you ask if I read the article I did, and I am just reading in between the lines because I doubt the CIA will come out and say our president was compromised due to the confidence drop it would cause in current human intel assets and future ones as well.
The Russians have been doing espionage far longer than we have. They’ve always been better at that side of things; I’d view an open accounting of things with more confidence than being told nothing and assuming the worst. If 45 was that damaging, it’s easier to recover if the whole world knows it.
From a strategic standpoint, we are fighting a proxy war with one of the world “superpowers” without putting a single American soldier at risk. We are straining the resources of said “superpower”, exposing their military weaknesses, and thus indirectly strengthening our position of military power on the world stage.
From an economic standpoint, the war being in Ukraine is fantastic for the US military industrial complex. This is a rare case of public support of increased arms production. It’s an opportunity to offload old weapon inventory, and gives manufactures the luxury of honing logistics of new weapon production without the threat of conflict to the United States. Weapon manufacturers currently have live-fire test zone in conflict with a superpower to test old and new weapon systems.
It’s all red-state, support our troops, big-business war profiteering touted by conservatives for the last two decades safely bottled up on the other side of the world. Why would conservative-minded politicians not support the war?
Every headline of “We gave $X of new aid to Ukraine” is windfall subsidy for one of the strongest sectors of the US economy - weapons manufacturing.
As a liberal, I find myself conflicted and weirdly supportive of it too, after having been against American military crusades for a good long while, this seems like an actual justified use of American military power. Which, to me, says that conservatives not in support of it are either just being contrarian because it’s something that liberals are mostly for and they’re willing to cut their nose off to spite their face, OR their leadership has been compromised by Russia and are doing its bidding. This was the party that for decades was frothing at the mouth ready to go to nuclear war against Russia and wants to use the American military for everything from stopping illegal immigration to dealing with diplomatic disputes to freeing American tourists, yet suddenly they’ve found Jesus and think we shouldn’t be helping a country resist being invaded?
conservatives not in support of it are either just being contrarian because it’s something that liberals are mostly for and they’re willing to cut their nose off to spite their face
That’s practically their name brand.
Why would conservative-minded politicians not support the war?
U.S. conservative politicians serve Putin. Whether by kompromat or by bribery, conservatives serve Putin and not U.S. citizens.
Isn’t the more likely explanation that they have more to gain from a second Trump term, lowering corporate taxes?
The more they undermine Biden and Ukraine, the likelier it is in their view that Trump makes a comeback.
Well said!
Thank god lemmy.world defederated hexbear, I don’t have to hear how we’re spending all that money that would otherwise never go to tax cuts for the rich.
It did? Bless. I missed that. The less hexbears and lemmygrad posters I have to see on Ukraine posts the better.
Lemmygrads are still here, but hexbears were absolutely the worst so still a big win.
Ah, that explains why it’s been so much more pleasant lately.
We need to tar and feather every one of those russian stooges in congress.
Republicans not supporting something is a very good reason to do it. It’s probably something sensible if it pisses them off.
What Republican support?
That’s because Republicans are traitors and work for Putin’s interests.
This is old news. It’s boring and (some) people aren’t paying attention anymore. It’s hard to “rile up the base” with old news.
They may be evil, but sometimes it’s incompetence or short sighted narcissism
This is the best summary I could come up with:
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy worked to shore up US support for Ukraine on a whirlwind visit to Washington on Thursday, delivering an upbeat message on the war’s progress while facing new questions about the flow of US dollars that for 19 months have helped keep his troops in the fight against Russian forces.
President Joe Biden gave Zelenskiy a red-carpet arrival on the White House South lawn and more ceremony than world leaders normally receive, and made clear his concern with Congress.
And Republican McCarthy also confirmed that he declined Zelenskiy’s request for a joint session of Congress, as happened during the Ukrainian president’s dramatic visit to Washington last winter, saying there wasn’t time for that on short notice.
Back home, Russia launched its heaviest strikes in a month in the hours before Zelenskiy’s arrival at Congress – killing three, igniting fires and damaging energy infrastructure as Russian missiles and artillery pounded cities across Ukraine.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan underscored Thursday that Biden would seek to drive home with Zelenskiy’s visit that the US and the world “send the unmistakable message that in the 21st century, a dictator cannot be allowed to conquer or carve up his neighbor’s territory”.
Russian president Vladimir Putin, who hopes to outlast allied backing for Kyiv, will be ready to capitalize if he sees Ukraine is running low on air defense or other weapons.
The original article contains 803 words, the summary contains 231 words. Saved 71%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
while teachers go to work for Cosco to increase their income…
they’re not taking it from the teachers pockets. learn how your own country works. this is the one good thing the US military has done since the country was founded.
Literally aid for the country who are motivated and already fighting the US’s biggest treat.
And most importantly - literally zero US soldiers were sent to weaken russia. A weak russia is good for US and for the rest of the world.
All the Ukraine War is, is a means of de-stabilizing Russia long enough to keep them from “gold backing” their Ruble and Crypto Currencies which would basically render the US Dollar worthless. In order to drum up support for their war mongering, leftist propaganda riles up the low IQ dem voters into believing anything but the actual truth lol. We have poor people living on the streets of America and this administration’s sending BILLIONS to Ukraine lol. Dem’s need to smarten up…and stop being such useful pawns.
Lol. Thank you for your stunning analysis. You are absolutely correct. America OBVIOUSLY orchestrated Russias invasion of a sovereign nation.
Nah really though, get bent you goon.
I’m confused because I thought it was Russia who invaded Ukraine. What am I missing here?
Also I agree that poor people shouldn’t be living in the streets, so perhaps we should house and feed them all.
I’m not at all familiar with the mechanics of “golf backing.” Could you clarify what you mean by that?
Just like Russia blew up their Nordstream pipeline…you people will believe anything your media tells you.
Did you make an account today just to troll? I would say that it seems bot like but most of those are not as obvious about it.
People are homeless not because the government lacks funding, but because the government doesn’t give a damn. Those billions being given to Ukraine were never going to be spent addressing poverty had the war not happened, and if Congress suddenly had a change of heart, they’d have zero problems finding and allocating as much money as they want to anti homeless programs Ukraine war or not
