    Most of America is not that rural. Bicycles are only “deathtraps” because of the way we’ve built our cities. There is nothing inevitable about it, and we can fix it without making gigantic investments to infrastructure.

    Less than 5% of people in my city commute by bicycle. Around 25% still work at home post-pandemic, but the majority still commute by car. This is pretty typical, even though my city is often cited as one of the best bike-friendly cities in the US. If we could get the bike numbers up to 20-30% while maintaining work at home numbers, that would be transformative.

    The fuckcars group asks for too much, but there are clear paths to reducing the number of cars on the road without leaving people with no transportation option.
