Looking at Myles Garrett’s career to this point he’s looking like the best 1OA non-qb I’ve seen in my lifetime, but I’m curious who the top one would be. I know it’s tough because different positions look at different metrics but is there someone above Garrett?
Can we get a Bo Jackson Honorable mention? Since he technically was drafted by the Buccs in ‘86, even though he accepted being drafted 7th round selection in ‘87.
Bo Jackson is overrated in the NFL world. Incredible athlete, potentially the greatest college football player of all time. When it comes to the NFL, he was a bust. It’s not his fault he got injured, but he was a bust
Travon Walker. Just wait for it. When this thread gets brought up again in 5 years, and he’s made 4 all-pros, he’ll enter the conversation. I’ll be correct. This will age well.
Micah. Aaron. Parsons.
Myles Garrett
I was a kid who didn’t follow college football yet I kept hearing Orlando Pace’s name.
My first thought was that it would likely be a great running back but I think I have to go with Bruce Smith. Still tied for the most first-team all-Pro selections of any defensive player ever. He has both a peak and longevity that maybe only Jerry Rice can match for non-QBs. Would be really hard to make a case to top him that’s based on objectivity rather than subjective factors like “cultural impact.”
Orlando Pace
Bruce Smith
Orlando Pace was pretty good too.
Fascinating that since 1997, only 3 positions have been selected first overall: QB, OT, and DE
Might see a WR go first this next draft
ugh if MHJ goes to the team that refuses to acknowledge the forward pass…
Positional value goes crazy.
I’d like to think I would take the BPA but I can’t pretend like I wouldn’t lean heavily toward QB, LT, CB and pass rusher.
PAUL HORNUNG 1957. Led the league in scoring for like 50 years
Aside from alleged murder, are we going to forget about The Juice?
Yeah the question wasn’t “best non QB at #1 with no criminal convictions”
Looking at non QB #1 picks in the hall of fame 1997 - Orlando Pace, STL Rams, OT 1985 - Bruce Smith, BUF, DE 1978 - Earl Campbell, HOU (Oilers), HB 1976 - Lee Roy Selman, Tampa Bay, DE
Earl Campbell was scary good, just had a relatively short career.
- Bruce Smith
- Orlando Pace
- Ron Yary
- Myles Garrett
- OJ Simpson
- Earl Campbell
- Ed Too Tall Jones
- Bubba Smith
- Irving Fryar
- Keyshawn Johnson
- everyone else
I actually had no idea Keyshawn was a number 1 pick
Really gonna put Myles Garrett over OJ Simpson & Earl Campbell? They both have arguments for best RB all time
this list is stupid. either OJ is #1 or not on it at all. is your argument that his murders were bad enough to drop him from 1st to 5th???
Irving Fryar was a 5 time pro-bowler.
“Big Daddy” Dan Wilkinson was a force on the interior line.
Mario Williams wasn’t the most exciting pick, but he was better than Reggie Bush or Vince Young. He was the right pick.Dan Wilkinson was absolutely not a force on the D line. He was replacement level.
