I’m having this error most of the time I try to comment. It seems to be because I can’t manually select the comment language like I can on the web UI.

I just fixed this myself. And it’s not related to the interface language.

Seems like it depends on the instance/community you are trying to comment on as it’s not an error everywhere. But you have to have only a language that the instance/community allows selected as a possible response language.

To do this, login to your instance on a web browser and go to your settings. Scroll down to “Languages” and choose just the one that the community/community you’re trying to use allows.

So if you’re reading this, you probably want to unselect all languages and only select English.

Ideally, we could pick the language for the comment in jerboa. Another nice to have feature for lemmy in general would be to have a priority rabked list of languages.

I have both of these sets like this, and I’m still occasionally hitting snags on certain communities. Oddly enough, I still have to (occasionally) manually select the language to get my comments to go through on the desktop. It seems like something else is wrong even with these settings set like this.

You can fix it by switching your interface language in your account settings from Browser Default to English, or whatever language you most often type in.

Not the greatest solution if you’re bilingual, though.

Edit: It seems like you can’t access that setting from Jerboa, you have to edit that setting on the website.

Do you mean you have English checked off in Languages? That’s a different setting, you’ll need to select a language under Interface Language.

Here’s a picture of the Interface Language setting:

Now, if we were talking about the same thing, then yeah I’d have no clue what’s going on.

Can’t say I blame you lol. It’s really not an obvious setting, glad to hear it solved your issue!

Well, to be completely honest, I’m still having issues on certain threads, even with this setting enabled. It seems to have solved the problem in some circumstances, though.

Weirdly enough, the web UI doesn’t seem to be defaulting to English, even when it’s the only option. No idea if that’s an issue with Lemmy 0.17.4; I think a few fixes for different things are on the way for the next version. Honestly, Jerboa implementing the language option would solve the problem. I’m self-hosting this instance of Lemmy, but it’s the official Ansible install, and it’s worked pretty darn well so far. I don’t think it’s a configuration issue, but I can definitely fiddle with the config files if you think that would help. The admin setting’s language option is set to English as well.
