    Reminds me of how cake mixes never really needed you to add eggs, but were formulated to require them, just so customers could feel like they were making a cake.

    Probably an unpopular opinion. I think the idea is neat. I’m a car enthusiast and I own an EV. EVs are great, powerful, efficient and fun. But they are not the same type of fun as a manual car on a twisty road and I think Toyota is on to something in giving you the option. A car can be both a great commuter and a fun experience on a twisty mountain road without the need to own and maintain a additional “for fun” car.

      Thanks for an alternate perspective! I’ve driven manuals before, but never would consider myself a manual enthusiast. It’s just hard for me to imagine that a joystick triggering sound effects would give enough of the feel of driving stick to make it fun.

        It’ll take some clever programming to get the motors to behave “correctly” for the input, and some suspension of disbelief from the driver. But I can believe that manufacturers will be able to get close enough eventually.

        Of course there will always be a sacrifice here. But if you don’t want to make a sacrifice on the experience then what you’re actually looking for is an EV for your daily driving and an actual stick ICE for fun. But most people can’t afford to keep an extra car around just for fun. So the compromises here are probably your best bet.

        And for the environmental aspect, you aren’t going to get people who drive stick for fun to give that up. If you actually want to entertain the idea of getting 100% of ICE vehicles off the road, there’s going to need to be something for thr crowd who just enjoys cruising with their manuals.

    I love my stick shift and I’ve accepted that it will probably be the last one I own a my next car will most likely be hybrid or full electric. That being said this is ridiculous and I wish I was in the room when they approved this. Who is this even for? Amazing.

      The funniest thing to me is that people who drive stick are (in my experience) the least likely to tolerate fakeness of any kind in their car.

        That’s probably fair. I’m very utilitarian when it comes to vehicles, they are a tool to get me from A to B. Dumb stuff like a fake manual shift would make me not want to buy the car lol.

      TBF they’ve been doing that with sporty ICE cars for years too because the interiors were too quiet

    The kind of ev community that I think should spring up is hobbyists that turn their cars into everything computers. Or at least dual purpose. Someone down the street could their car to broadcast a radio station while driving.

    Or even better we get clubs of people finding ways to make the cars more regenerative so they never have to charge.

      Never needing to charge through regen violates thermodynamics. Even if you imagined a perfect regen system that reclaimed 100% of kinetic energy, most of your losses in EVs come from drag (tires and wind resistance) and you don’t get that back

        Yeah I wasn’t being totally realistic. They could have windmills mounted on top that run a steam engine that recharges the battery idk

          More drag means more energy to move it. I would love to see solar panels on car roofs some day, but the efficiency isn’t there yet.

        I’ve been pleasantly surprised though how well this works in stop and go traffic like you get in or around Chicago. It does almost seem like you could go indefinitely, even though that’s obviously not possible.

          Most of that is less about the regenerative breaking than the much lower air resistance at low speed. Mileage in EVs gets crazy high at low speed.

          I did notice a significant increase in charge going down a 10 mile slope from the mountains in CO one time on a road trip though.
