Sky Harbor is the Phoenix airport. He’s claiming he got through security with it.

I mean airport security is not as secure as it claims. I could see some tired TSA worker waving him through without paying much attention to the ID, especially in a busy airport like Phoenix.

Every airport I’ve been through they scan your id, not just look at it

In the EU you used to have within-the-EU flights where you wouldn’t be asked for an ID once. Scan your ticket and there you go. Maybe you bought this PDF off a weird looking guy in front of the airport, who cares. They now check it more often than not, but it still happens you fly without a single ID check.

So, I’d assume for a national US flight it probably makes sense nobody needed to actually track his ID for immigration purposes, and so a short look without a digital scan is enough. And a tired TSA employee just didn’t care at all on that day.

I imagine them thinking that if they didn’t the next two hours will be spent dealing with a crazy person throwing a tantrum and that it’s not worth it

Maybe twenty years ago. You need RealID now and something tells me that thing doesn’t scan.
