I wish I had the option to not pay for CBC… must be nice to have the choice.
(I don’t pay for any news otherwise, except for government subsidies which I think should be removed from all news)
CBC gets about $1.2 billion from the government. The government collected about $332.2 billion in taxes. That means CBC is 0.36% of the budget. If every Canadian paid taxes equally, than you’d be charged $30 a year for CBC. But that’s not how taxes work at all. You’re probably paying less than $1 per year for CBC. If that’s make or break for you then you got some bigger problems to deal with.
Journalism is one of the places it makes the MOST sense for taxpayers to be subsidizing. Advertiser and investor supported journalism is notoriously harmful. We would be better off defunding k-8 than journalism.
CBC has been keeping the government more accountable than a lot of other news sources. They try to do actual journalism with actual research, which I know might sound scary to you.
You could always just leave Canada.
As a population we have decided that it is worth funding a public broadcaster. Despite all the misinformation the right seems to spread about CBC they are very unlikely to actually touch it if they are elected because of how popular it is within their voter base.
Unfortunately for you pretty much every modern democracy involves a government that doesn’t ask every citizen to vote on every matter, so you’ll likely have a hard time finding somewhere that gives you the choice you’re looking for.
