Just starting to bike commute and looking for a way to carry my pocket essentials. What’s your favorite way to carry?

I put that stuff in my pannier bag, and just keep the access card to my building’s parking lot in a zippered pocket in my shorts.

I still have them in my pockets. I did order a nice camelchops wallet to keep miscellaneous bike shit together in my pannier, that has tyre levers, multi tool, patch kit etc in it.

I use a pannier messenger bag. I can carry it over a shoulder to the bike, then it clips onto the rear rack. I got this one: https://banjobrothers.com/products/banjo-brothers-market-pannier

I used it for years until it finally wore out, and then bought a new one because it’s so simple. It’s just a big, rugged sack. I keep it by the door, and if I need anything (computer, jacket, snacks, change of clothes for my kid) I toss it in, and when I’m getting onto my bike I’ll often just toss my pocket items in. If you don’t want them floating around too much it has a little pocket on the outside and a little pocket on the inside.

As I said, I really like it’s simplicity. It’s not fancy, but $70 for a really durable go-anywhere bag that pops on and pops off pretty much any bike rack has really worked out for me.

I’m usually wearing cargo shorts, so evening stays in the pockets. I don’t care for wearing a backpack if I can avoid it. A saddlebag is nice if I have to pack a laptop.

Usually in my pants pocket, but if I’m in shorts and the pockets are too loose I have a bag that’s clipped to my handle post that has just enough room for wallet, phone and keys.

a toptube bag, in my case the one that sits in front of the handlebar stem, with one single zip along the long axis so I can open/close during ride (I had used the similar bag but with zip all around rim of the bag, and that was pain to meddle with mid-ride).

Saddlebags hold a surprising amount of stuff! Small frame bags are also a good option.
