Here’s a lightbulb moment: stuff costs money and time, even if it’s on the internet. Whatever you get for free

Alex. It’s entirely unnecessary to be this hostile. I host websites, services, and build software for a living. I’m well aware of the time & resource costs of doing this… I made no claim otherwise.

I clearly approached this with good faith, asking specific, pointed, questions to surface important facts about this instance. NONE of these where answered or addressed.

I offhandedly mentioned the taste of the posts tone, and moved on saying “You probably have your reasons” to indicate I’m not attacking you. It’s just my opinion, and moved on.

Do you feel in some way entitled to my and PL’s team time and resources? Have you contributed in any way to PL, financially or otherwise, so you can have a little say of its future? Or is this a “Entertain me, peasants” mentality?

    • Nowhere did I make any claims of entitlement.
    • Nowhere did I complain about the content.
    • Nowhere did I attack, discredit, or trivialize the resource it takes to run the instance.

You’re attacking ghosts and lashing out at me. I understand you probably have gotten a lot of flak running an instance, but that’s no reason to be so hostile and insulting.

Especially if you’re goal is to actually sell the thing.

The important thing here, the bulk of my previous comment, is what matters. Do you have additional information for those questions?

If you’re serious about offloading this instance, then lets focus on the things that matter here, which are the facts about the instance, not the egos?

How it this measured? How is it trending? What is the actual dollar value you are evaluating this at? What are the operating costs?

    As a matter of price:

250k uniques. How is this measured? How many are from other instances? How many from mobile apps? How many on desktop? How many are actually unique? How are you counting users?

$0.005 ARPU is quite dependant on how users are actually measured. How long do they stay? What % drops off after how many navigations? What does your engagement look like?

Is this assuming 250k unique hits is 250k revenue generating users? What is the time frame for you ARPU?

There’s a lot to know if this is being used like a product and you are trying to sell it as such.

    As a matter of taste:

This sounds like the objective of starting the community was money 🤔

Having limited time & resources makes sense, life just be that way, but essentially saying “donations aren’t enough to purchase my time” indicates a whole other motivation that’s inherently counter productive to the platform IMHO.

I’m sure you have your reasons, but the post is kinda snobby about it.

    This needs more details!

  • Even if your partner did find that attractive that would just mean that they, like the grand majority of the population, are attracted to the sexually mature/maturing 16-18 range. Something like 10 years too old to be pedophilia.

This is a statement of fact not a statement of opinion, nor a statement of acceptance or encouragement. I say this preemptively because there are always those commenters who will attack you personally because they’re trying to manufacture outrage. Making it impossible to talk about real world subjects.

  • Manufactured outrage is largely to blame for a lot of the cultural war issues that we deal with these days…

Finding something to be outraged at for finding someone to be outraged on behalf of even if the person who you are now acting for has no feelings of the sort. All it is is a brand new form of red herring politics that drains energy from real problems that we could be solving.

It’s self-serving and encourages and even drives toxicity.

  • Isn’t a forum, as a concept, exactly what each Lemmy instance is?

As for growth, you will grow organically without explicit federation with non-nsfw instances. Lemmeynsfw is the porn Lemmy right now. You don’t need to have your porn popping up elsewhere for users to find you.

The content of this instance is such that:

    1. User’s are likely to create porn alts
    2. User’s are going to actively seek you out

Which means growth is guaranteed. Nevermind that explicitly trying to grow a community through non-organic means (where the community needs to make concessions for growth) harm communities instead of making them better.

  • M8, I’m not here to have slap fights with people like you.

You clearly are talking in bad faith, you claim I’m making inflammatory despite you failing, entirely, twice now, to attack my argument and not me.

And after pushing you to not be an ass, here you are again, being an ass. How about you try and engage on the topic, instead of stooping to interpersonal politics?

I have little idea, yeah, that’s why I’m actually talking about it to kick off some conversation that either shows me why/how I’m wrong or otherwise increases my understanding. You have done neither, you have no leg to stand on to complain there as you have done nothing about it.

I’m a professional in this space, and am speaking from my experience in the industry and with scaling applications. I have a basis of understanding to pull from, and am enjoying actual discussion with others not you. And have learned a lot from others who have expanded on my points, and corrected me where I’m wrong. Again, you have done none of this.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with technical conversation and common discourse/argument? Because toxicity is not how you carry one on.

  • Instead of having a technical and factual discussion about it, let’s instead attack people!

No one here needs your flavor of toxicity…

If you can’t attack the argument or idea, attacking the person to rub your ego is a pretty toxic and nonproductive thing to do.

It’s your choice to be offended and to respond aggressively instead of treating it as a discussion on how we can improve the platform, what deficiencies are concerning, and how those will affect the users and instance owners.

  • Don’t even mention how risky it is having various people running the servers themselves.

Security? Backups? Due diligence? Ability to pay? Awol?

    All different person to person.

Idk a good solution, but the fediverse has big problems to solve. One of which is that instances are single servers, there is no distributed compute model, which means they crumple under load and can only scale so far. Not to mention the unsustainable costs that start coming with it…

If Lemmy in general grows to the user base of reddit, infrastructure costs(if it was optimized via scale) would be in the tens of millions/year. Given that it’s a hogepoge of mixed providers using expensive AF hosting probably hundreds of millions.
