Tbh I am a messy person, I trained myself to be organized but I still struggle to not lose my keys and I want something like the apple tag but FOSS, I’ve thought of an ESP32 or ATTINY with a bluetooth module but I don’t think apple uses that? It has to be durable and friendly with LineageOS, samsung stock and my dad lol.

I thought the point of the Apple tag was the gigantic iPhone network tracking where everything is. Yes it uses Bluetooth but the reality proprietary part is on the phones. I believe the spec for the tag itself is public. Do you just want something that beeps when you send a Bluetooth signal?

There’s probably a better way to do this, but I’ve just started using BLE Radar (F-Droid, Play Store), which can be set up to (among other things) tell you where your phone last saw a particular bluetooth address.

You don’t get the benefit of the tracking network that iPhones, and now Androids, are a part of, and it’s not built into the base system, but it’s FOSS, and your location data stays local.

    Strictly speaking, there isn’t one.

The tag tracking options on ios and android work because they rely on mesh networking with those devices.

Without a huge mesh network of billions of phones, computers and tablets, this technology doesn’t work.

Even if you only wanted it to work in your house, there isn’t something like that in the floss world.

A better option if you would prefer not to switch to ios or stock (?) android is the tile tags. They don’t have a huge network but if you need to figure out where your keys are in the house they work pretty good.

You gotta keep the batteries rotated though, but that’s part of the dad compatibility…
