Looked up the article. They’re mad that Dolly Parton, who is a very outspoken Christian, is specifically the kind who embraces the “God loves everyone and that means we should love everyone, too” ethos of Christianity. In other words, the author of the article is pissed that Dolly doesn’t gaybash. What a fucking piece of shit you have to be to sit down and be like “you know what’s wrong with this person? They aren’t cruel enough.”

good point, if i had a kid and they turned out to be a trump supporter, i would never accept that. but i also wouldn’t disown them like trump supporter parents do to their kids for being gay

Metal head here who idolizes Dolly. She’s a national treasure the likes of Mister Rogers. Who has also been attacked by the right.

For those interested she’s in a couple of VERY trans positive episodes of The Orville (one just her song 9-5 and the other in a long scene as herself).

Anyone bashing Dolly hates freedom is no good. A full on poophead.

She’s also in the movie 9 to 5, which was what the song was written for, which is about three women who have had enough of their misogynist boss and get revenge on him. On top of that, she starred in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which is one of the few films which doesn’t denigrate sex workers and actually shows them as normal people.

I saw 9 to 5 when it came out as I am old. I still love it.

All 3 female leads were awesome, and she absolutely held her own against the legendary Tomlin and Fonda. Also recently passed Dabney Coleman.

I was only 3 when it came out, but it was definitely a regular staple of the cable movie channels when I got older. My dad was a film historian, so we had all the movie channels so he could tape movies to show them in class. 9 to 5 would show up on occasion.

As you suggested, what an amazing cast!

Edit: Just read this on the IMDB-

This was Dolly Parton’s theatrical film debut. In preparation for her role as Doralee Rhodes, she not only committed to memory her own part, but the parts of every other role in the film. Apparently, the two experienced starring actresses, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, burst out laughing when Parton let on that she believed that pictures were filmed in the chronological order of a film’s script.

          That’s adorable and also impressive.

One of the many things I love about The Orville is that the song 9-5 became a revolutionary feminist anthem to the Moclans. And that she was sweet enough to make a cameo.

Through my teenage years I got wrapped up in an evangelical environment, but as an adult found my way to a non- denominational church. It was eye opening. The more I talked to the pastor, learned and read, I realized that people get wrapped up in their denominations like sports teams. And since the different denominations come about because of different interpretations of Scripture and the “rules” some group puts into place for their team, no wonder it’s the perfect environment for creating a culture of control and abuse for those seeking power.

This doesn’t make me not believe in God, this makes me not trust the motivations of people in power. On the day to day, I try to be the best I can to people around me, and share love, kindness, and respect. That’s my big take away from Jesus’ teachings at least.

There are many Christians whose faith does not involve pushing the law on others, but instead focus on the gospel and its inclusive nature.

These aren’t the loud ones who push regressive policies. Because the ones pushing regressive policies aren’t doing so because their religion tells them to, they’re making their religion fit whatever they feel the world should look like, picking and choosing which rules to follow or ignore based on their worldview, shaping their religion to fit their bigotry. They would hate Jesus, who preached paying taxes, being generous to the needy, and accepting sinners and those despised by the establishment of the time.

they should be the loud ones though, i really struggle to see how you can be a good christian in america without having john brown as a role model.

like, the Swedish Church (closest we have to a state religion) is actively and aggressively pro-lgbt, if anyone tries to spread hate they smack them with a bible and shut that shit down fast.

Sensible religious people don’t have to sit in the background doing charity work like a sailor futilely scooping water out of a leaky boat, they can speak up and push back against what can be rightfully classed as blasphemy that spreads hate and injustice.

I’m not saying the open and affirming churches don’t fight for causes and social justice.

I’m just saying that they’re not the ones running governments and controlling rural populations. Those people don’t want to hear it. It’s just like how they abandoned Fox News for Newsmax and OAN when Fox called the election for Biden. To them, religion is a source of validation, not something to emulate or follow. They don’t want to be challenged.

There was an article a while back about a pastor who said someone in his congregation argued with him about something he said in his sermon, which had been Christ’s own words. The congregant said, “That’s not Christian, it’s too weak.” Or something to that effect.

I mean, in context that verse is about being aware one’s belief in Jesus may cause strife with their family/community, and how Christians are meant to endure this strife without denying their faith. The choice of wording makes sense in the context of the time it was written, when affirming Christ is God would have absolutely caused some major animosity with those who don’t believe. It’s assuring the reader that the division and pain that will come from those disagreements is not lost on God, and also not something we can turn away from and ignore.

The Christians that everyone is up in arms about all the time are close to the worst representation of the faith as possible, and you can easily point out their lazy interpretations as well as scripture that, more often than not, outright rejects their twisting of the faith. Modern day Pharisees all the way. Unfortunately the church on a national level is inundated with them, and has done a poor job of separating from them.

yeah, when hillary called the trump cultists deplorable, and a bunch of people wigged out, crying about her saying mean things, all I could think about is how I have heard that, and much worse, from right wing media, for as long as I have memories. At the time people would say “but she did it as a candidate on an official forum”, or something similar, while her rival was just a sewer vomiting this type of sentiment, and worse, on a daily basis. And all the people who spent so much time calling everyone snowflakes, completely melted down over one insult.

      Fucking eh!

If you spend 10 minutes looking into Dolly Parton, you’ll find a Fucking Angel.

Legitimately. Look into her reading program. Not just the news articles, but the written deals. She makes sure that if her program is a success, that the county is contracted to keep it going FOR-FUCKING-EVER. Her legacy is generations of kids who graduate high school because she sent them books.

And that’s just ONE thing she did, with a legacy that will outlast every one of us.

      We ride at dawn.

She was inducted to the rock and roll hall of fame but declined it because she didn’t play rock and roll, then they persuaded her to accept it anyway and she got inducted. What does she do? She of course makes a rock and roll album with duets among that a good duet with Rob Halford on Bygones.

I live in Tennessee. The number of lives that Dolly Parton has changed for the better is immeasurable. The two things you’re supposed to do as a Christian are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

She loves her neighbors more than she loves herself. Anyone talking trash about Dolly is the worst kind of person.

My wife and I recently had a child. We came home the other day to a book in the mail; “The Little Engine That Could”. It was sent by a foundation that Dolly either started or contributes heavily to. She chose that book as the introductory book because it reminds her of the struggles her father endured and overcame learning to read. Fuck whoever dispareges Dolly Parton in the neck with a rusty screwdriver.

I swear to god, Dolly Parton is going to enter the Christianity canon. 200 years from now, she’ll be part of the Trinity.

I mean, full support, of course.

I hope these people have IBS for a couple of weeks. And during times on the can, use that quiet time to reflect. Praise Dolly. Amen.

Somebody actually woke up one morning & thought, “Man, I know everyone’s convinced Dolly’s such a great person… how can I quickly cement that idea even further publicly & make myself look like an even bigger douche at the exact same time?!”

Yes, her destructive beliefs, like, Checks notes… turning the other cheek.

Where does she get these terrible ideas? Probably some book they never read. Book reading is fur libtards.
