Before the 1960s, it was really hard to get divorced in America.

Typically, the only way to do it was to convince a judge that your spouse had committed some form of wrongdoing, like adultery, abandonment, or ā€œcrueltyā€ (that is, abuse). This could be difficult: ā€œEven if you could prove you had been hit, that didnā€™t necessarily mean it rose to the level of cruelty that justified a divorce,ā€ saidĀ Marcia Zug, a family law professor at the University of South Carolina.

Then came a revolution: In 1969, then-Gov. Ronald Reagan of California (who was himself divorced) signedĀ the nationā€™s first no-fault divorce law, allowing people to end their marriages without proving theyā€™d been wronged. The move was a recognition that ā€œpeople were going to get out of marriages,ā€ Zug said, and gave them a way to do that withoutĀ resorting to subterfuge. Similar laws soon swept the country, and rates ofĀ domestic violence and spousal murderĀ began to drop as people ā€” especially women ā€” gained more freedom to leave dangerous situations.

Today, however, a counter-revolution is brewing:Ā Conservative commentatorsĀ andĀ lawmakersĀ are calling for an end to no-fault divorce, arguing that it has harmed men and even destroyed the fabric of society. Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers, for example,Ā introduced a billĀ in January to ban his stateā€™s version of no-fault divorce. The Texas Republican Party added a call to end the practice to itsĀ 2022 platformĀ (the plank is preserved inĀ the 2024 version). Federal lawmakers like Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) andĀ House Speaker Mike Johnson, as well as former Housing and Urban Development SecretaryĀ Ben Carson, have spoken out in favor of tightening divorce laws.

I suppose I could call myself sane and Iā€™m from the US. My outlook is pretty grim honestly. We have far-right ā€œchristiansā€ trying to turn the US into a theocracy and install a dictator. Itā€™s real Hand Maidā€™s Tail shit and itā€™s scary as fuck.

I donā€™t think we have crossed the point of no return yet but we are damn fucking close. I also donā€™t know that there is going to be a way out of this without violence.

One thing I CAN say for sure, if Trump wins in November we have crossed that line and the US is going to be fucked for a long time.

Also semi-sane US citizen. Same feelings. Would not be surprised if there is a major civil incident within the next 20 years.

Lower class is fucked without anything to lose.

Middle class is getting milked dry to keep infinite growth alive.

Wealthy R class keeps making these rules for thee not for me proposals in order to seize control.

Wealthy D class, other than a handful of progressives, are just as corrupt with better marketing. Complacency over Israelā€™s actions put some light on it at least.

These dinosaurs who are running these crimes against humanity wonā€™t retire from office.

R has been stupidly effective at wrapping up hate in ā€œchristian love.ā€ I canā€™t even understand how people buy into this crap. Wealth and power is all they want. These social issues to keep people infighting is so blatant and obvious.

I can absolutely see growing unrest if this continues. It was a bit close for comfort during the peak of BLM, but I can absolutely understand why it happened.

Good summary, I got about the same impression. Looking in from the outside it seems so obvious that there is a lot of corruption, consolidation of power, consolidation of wealth, but I guess itā€™s difficult to do anything about.

Itā€™s scary as F to look at that madman getting closer to getting that kind of power again.I shiver to think what heā€™ll accomplish when heā€™s prepared.

We have far-right ā€œchristiansā€ trying to turn the US into a theocracy and install a dictator. Have you seen the documentary God Forbid (hulu), shiny happy people (prime), or the much older netfflix doc, the family? I only ask because youā€™re basically making the same conclusions I got from watching them.
