True is wearing “morning dress” which is a cutaway morning coat, vest, and striped or checked trousers with a homburg hat. You only see it at formal weddings now with the homburg replaced by a top hat. It would have been old fashioned even in True’s time.

By the early part of the 20th century the morning coat was replaced by a black suit jacket which makes a “stroller suit” with the checked or striped trouser. You see that combination in Fritzi Ritz and other period pieces. The louts he deals with are always dressed in “new” fashion. You see tweed, seersucker and that kind of thing.

The clothing is very much a clue that True is staunch supporter of the old ways and mores battling against social decay. Today’s strip for example, one doesn’t disparage a lady’s character.

Eta: whoops! That was the strip before this one. The lesson here is …uh…stay out of his way? Smoke 30 feet from entrances?

        It’s “entrances are for entering.”

He’s upset that they are blocking it. I also believe ol’ Ev thinks poorly of cigarettes.

Yeah. A lot of them are just straight up consideration of other people. “Keep your feet off the seats” or “move your packages” kind of thing.

That’s a great detail, thanks for pointing it out.
