Today’s our first frost date, and I haven’t had a single ripe tomato yet. Time to break out the plant covers and cross my fingers.
I usually make green tomato relish. What are your favorite green tomato canning recipes?
You should deep fry some, fried green tomatoes are delicious
Or you might be able to shallow fry them, if that works that might be easier
Pan fried is definitely on the menu
Enjoy! ☺️ I wish I could have some lol
You could also try leaving a sprinkler watering your plants. I’ve managed to get tomatoes through mild (and some not so mild) freezes that way.
Roasted green tomato salsa is excellent
That sounds delicious, do you have a favorite recipe?
Prep some fried green tomatoes! After breading I pop them in the freezer on a tray and then move to a container. When ready to eat you then cook them like normal. I didn’t grow tomatoes that will work well for them this year and I’m bummed. I wish you all the luck in your green tomato adventures.
Yum, freezing some is a great idea
Shit you have tomatoes? Mine haven’t even done much yet and our first frost is anytime now as well, but it’s also typically the hottest month… meaning yeah 36c during the day, but can also freeze and/or snow the next day.
We had an super late frost as well as well as a heat wave, so anything cold weather bolted and anything hot weather got stunted for a bit.
Yeah it was a weird growing season. I’ve got about 12 tomatoes between 2 plants. One plant I grabbed from the store’s cherry tomato section this spring and didn’t notice until I got home its tag said Big Boy. Since it’s about a 40 minute drive to town I decided to just plant it and hope for the best.
I grow mine in planter boxes and usually get 55 day varieties. And I try to get the plants in about mid-May under plastic tents to get a jump start.
