The morning after former President Donald Trump repeated racist claims about Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, some Haitian families are keeping their children home from school for their safety, according to an area activist. Those who allowed their children did so, but with heavy hearts.

“She [my niece] was scared, but I told her to go, that God would protect,” said one Haitian resident, who asked that she not be identified publicly for fear of reprisal.

“We’re all victims this morning,” said the woman, who moved to Springfield six years ago. “They’re attacking us in every way.”

Aside from the anxiety caused by Tuesday night’s debate, the woman also said her cars have been vandalized twice in the middle of the night. She woke up one morning to broken windows and another to acid thrown on the vehicle. She’s added cameras to her driveway and tried to report the incidents to the police to no avail.

Conservatism is harmful. It always has been.

In all of human history, nothing good has ever come from conservatism. Nothing. There is simply no place in a modern culture for harmful, regressive, hate-based ideologies like conservatism.

I miss when conservatives tried to conserve things like national parks (i.e. Teddy Roosevelt) instead of using conservatism as a mask for racism.

It’s like, it seems appropriate for a two party system to have one party push for progress, while the other advises caution. But they dropped the euphemism and have been just blatantly racist/xenophobic/anti-other for far too long to pretend now that conservatism is anything else.

it’s almost like we should do something about it instead of waiting for the government to do something about it.

it’s almost like the world is on a collision course with a giant metaphorical iceberg while we stand idly by and do nothing.

it’s almost like any amount of carnage and destruction would be better than a future in which we continue to let morons have a hand in guiding our society.

It’s insane how much we have regressed with respect to this.

This country has always been racist, but at least since I’ve been alive, the general consensus is that racism is bad and it was never acceptable to be openly racist without being socially ostracized (to be fair, I’m referring to the region of the US where I grew up. I’m sure it varied by region).

The rise of Trump, and the ubiquity of social media has empowered these people to step out of the shadows, I guess, and show the true face of over 1/3 of voters in this country.

    It fucking sucks to see

This isn’t even the first time he’s done this, remember what happened with Covid and Asian Americans? Just look at the hate groups that support him, he never really distances himself from them, and he riles them up or gives them a target whenever it behooves him to do so.

What we always suspected is now uncontestable; the US is rotting from within and racism is our disease.

It’s really insane if you listen to Reagan talking about immigrants being the strength of the nation and keeping the USA young and growing. And how if we ever stop with immigration or would ruin the country.

They won’t, but there’s a very good chance some Haitian families will get SWAT’d by racist neighbors.

This is an OLD racist trope being brought back. Maybe the originator of it didn’t know about the trope, or maybe they did, but you don’t need evidence of this happening for a racist trope to work.

yeah, it’s definitely racist, but i think the traditional racist trope here is that asians eat dogs. I’m not aware of this extending to other groups, but i suppose racism doesn’t really give a shit?

Except maybe lost pets… but pets get lost. Every neighborhood has lost cat posters don’t they?

        that’s not evidence of anything.

“guys somebody died!” “oh shit there must be a serial killer around here now!” “nah man he just fell down a set of stairs”

a bunch of cats in a specific neighborhood going missing, now that’s suspicious.

A policeman walks to the corner of the building and, distracted by his phone, clashes into an italian coming from the other side. Both fall on their asses confused. Then, out of nowhere, a hooded person appears and starts to attack an italian. A policeman stands up and pulls them apart, asks a hooded man what this is about. Looking geniunely frustrated, they answer: ‘I saw you and him, and I thought that it’s finally happening.

There are a lot of variations of this anecdote* that, for me, puts it pretty great. A dire and exaggerated social situation creates a minority group of short-fused people who are just one inch from acting on their frustration and biases or\and even dreams, they just need a call to action or\and a guarantee they won’t be persecuted. And their orange monarch just mumbled something in his rant, accidentially this time unlike the Jan 6 coup attempt, and it enabled them to act. In spite of the nurturing the MAGA cult does to this group, they aren’t enough to cause a snowballing effect just yet, but the ripple effect of his another random bullshit rant shows they are listening and can do covert, sneaky shit to other humans after just a whistle. It’d take a long time for the US to recover from trumpism.

    * I believe the original one was about the nationalistic Black Hundreds and how they, enabled by tsarist police and the wealthy, started a string of chaotic pogroms, torching houses and hurting\killing hundreds of thousands.

While I agree whole heartedly with everything you typed. I just find it incredibly ironic that the story features an Italian. A group known for being persecuted but became famously racist as hell (Italian Americans included) with a prime minister with a hard on for facism.

    Acid?

Because of some gibberish an old, senile man sputtered out? There haven’t even been any pets eaten. Are they throwing acid just incase? Wtf is wrong with people.
