It was awkward and racist, but if you watch the video the crowd cheers as he instantly relates it to money. I’m tellin’ ya, we’re fucked if every Dem and Trump hater dont come out of the woodworks to put this guy in his place. His support is way more entrenched than Lemmy will have you believe. We have to descend upon the polls like the Golden Horde.

I was shocked to hear my next door neighbor last night tell me “be prepared if Kah-mala wins. They think January 6th was bad? That was a drunk frat party compared to what’s coming. She never even got the nomination. I got my guns ready and I know people with more than that. If these democrats steal the election in November, you better be ready. There’s going to be blood in the streets.”

Well, she did though. There was a whole convention for it. But of course facts don’t poll well with that demographic.

I’m not saying they’re not going to try, but it will be much harder for them to do anything like they did last time on Jan. 6th. They had police, the DOJ, local officials and all kinds of state help last time while trump was still in office. This time, a lot of them have been put in jail and are certainly on lists. You have to be willing to put your world on the line and can’t claim innocence, so you’d have to be an idiot to try anything. I understand how it feels to be surrounded by the worst of them, but I really don’t think that’s the deal.

January 6th and certifications are a known issue. I’m more worried about domestic terrorism from the anger. Hopefully they’re loud about what they’re planning, the current administrations seems to take that stuff seriously.

Hmm, you might not fit in here then, we like to shoot first and ask questions later.

The good news is that most people don’t care what the president says, so as long as Trump doesn’t start WW3 or a civil war, we should be alright. If not, well, at least we had a good run.

Fair. A civil war an WW3 impacts us directly, any other war would just run up our national debt and therefore isn’t an issue. Bombing brown people is fine, we draw the line at shortages at the store (that’s why we to war against Covid, after all).

Fair, but my point is that most of the BS that happens here doesn’t really impact anyone, such as:

            • Jan 6 - would’ve mattered if Trump retained power, but he didn’t
            • mass shootings - blown out of proportion IMO (lots of misleading statistics), but also doesn’t impact anyone
            • LGBT issues - some states have truly terrible policies, but in general, things are pretty okay; I live in a red state too

I’m certainly no fan of Trump and have voted against him every election so far and plan to this election, but I also don’t think he’s nearly as dangerous as the posts that get attention here on Lemmy make him out to be. He’s certainly dangerous, but I think it’s more from a “stupid economic and foreign relations policy” perspective than the “next Hitler” perspective that so many online try to label him as.

The net result of a Trump vs Harris presidency probably won’t impact too many people outside the US. Neither seems particularly keen to start a massive war, and they both are championing policies that will likely make the economy worse (Trump’s tariffs and Harris’ price fixing and corporate tax hikes). Harris will probably be less bad overall for both Americans and non-Americans, but I highly doubt Trump will do anything truly atrocious, he really does want to be seen as “the best President” or whatever.

I certainly won’t convince you, and my post was largely meant to be funny, so take this for whatever it’s worth (probably what you paid for it).

I certainly appreciate where you’re coming from. But whereas I’ve no idea exactly what Biden did during his tenure, Trump’s mandate was a nearing constant barrage of WTF proclamations and online logorrhea, with some of his delirium actually affecting me personally and I for one, as a foreigner, like to have quiet, well-behaved neighbours. So if we could have another four years of peace and quiet, that would be nice.

another four years of peace and quiet

                Yes, that would be nice.

That said, for all of the nonsense Trump spewed, his actual changes were pretty mild:

                • increased deficit and probably contributed to COVID inflation (cash handouts and whatnot tend to cause inflation)
                • capital punishment - US previously had a moratorium on executions, which he lifted
                • immigration - reduced number of refugees admitted, increased border security; family separation was pretty awful too
                • trade - withdrew and renegotiated some agreements, levied tariffs; trade deficit increased
                • Russia - weakened sanctions on Russia
                • Afghanistan - negotiated withdrawal of US troops
                • Iran - withdrew from nuclear arms agreement and increased sanctions

Most of that doesn’t impact anyone, except maybe the weakened sanctions against Russia encouraged Putin to invade Ukraine. But that’s really hard to say, since the invasion didn’t happen until 2 years into Biden’s presidency, so it probably would have happened regardless. the trade negotiations were mostly directed at Asian trade partners (mostly China).

He was a terrible president, yes, but most of the impact to regular people was him spewing rhetoric on social media. I honestly just ignored that noise and was relatively happy during his presidency (and the tax cuts were nice).

switzerland? we’re 25% non-citizens which is the highest rate in europe (excluding microstates). Has caused some reactionary stuff though hence the rise of the racist far right party.

That’s compared to 7-8% of the US population for example. Or 12% of the German population (though getting german citizenship is easier than getting swiss citizenship).

Yes that’s definitely a part. But we also score far higher than other european countries on percentage of forgien born population and a bunch of other metrics. You can’t deny Switzerland is extremely multicultural.

Though our diversity tends to be majoritarily european and western. I think we have a smaller black or arab population than our neighbours.

            we’re 25% non-citizens

Refusing to give citizenship to residents isn’t a point in the country’s favor.

That’s compared to 7-8% of the US population for example.

If you want to get historical, the US is north of 99% migrants. But setting aside the politics of generational migration, we also have birthright citizenship and marital citizenship laws that naturalize people at a far more consistent rate. And we have an enormous territory, such that you can move from New York to California or Puerto Rico to Alaska and still enjoy citizenship.

What do you call a huge influx of East Coasters into Texas, Colorado, and Arizona if not migration?

Let me know when the majority of the Swiss population is French, and then you can brag about your diversity.

I’m not bragging about diversity just replying to someone calling switzerland an ethnostate. Jeez!

And I wouldn’t brag about most the US population being migrants from a couple centuries ago because that comes with the fact you practically wiped out the native population.

If you’d like to compare the US and Switzerland without using citizenship you could use percentage or forgein born population. 37% of the Swiss population vs 18% of the US population.

But I didn’t mean to start a US vs Switzerland contest, I just used US based statistics in my previous answer to illustrate how Switzerland is not currently an ethnostate. Especially since Switzerland contains 4 distinctive ethnicities since centuries. Schywzerdütsch have a very different culture than swiss romands or swiss italians etc. We don’t even speak the same language…

Unfortunately, you’ve got a Democrat running who is openly courting John Negroponte, Jeff Flake, and the Cheneys.

If Harris puts Liz Cheney into a cabinet position, like State or Intelligence or DHS, that’s exactly where we end up. We’ve just traded a loud borish egomaniac for a quieter and more sophisticated one.

Even if she doesn’t, there’s a murderers row of liberal-ish insiders who seem perfectly content to join shooting wars with Iran, Pakistan, Venezuela, China, half a dozen African nations, Mexico… Nevermind that proxy war with Russia we’re already in.

          unless you’re an accelerationist

Accelerationism isn’t a philosophy, it’s a coping mechanism. You get to pretend enshittification was your plan all along and not a disaster fully outside your control.

We don’t have a duopoly. We have a pair of regional monopolies. And it’s not the voting system that gives us candidates like Eric Adams or Mike Johnson or Joe Manchin. These are the consequence of a fully captured election system.

While he is a racist POS, this quote is edited from what he really said. Here’s the context and full clip on snopes:

While telling a story about Air Force One and the call sign for when a U.S. president is aboard the aircraft, Trump referenced its age and also former President Barack Obama, telling the BCF audience, “I love this great equipment. Although the plane’s 32 years old, I ordered new ones, and I saved $1.7 billion from what Obama was willing to pay. I have to tell you, [he’s a] Black president, but I got $1.7 billion less. Would you rather have the Black president or the white president who got $1.7 billion off the price? I think they want the white guy right now. Got $1.7 billion off the price.”

That context doesn’t change the meaning even slightly. If anything it makes it worse. He’s talking about an issue which is not related to race in any way, but he injects race into it. It shows exactly how he sees every aspect of the world.

I agreethat the full clip is just as damning. Which is why editing it to be misleading is unnecessary and counterproductive

We’re still not seeing the full context. I assume this was part of a wider conversation about the role of race in politics.

He’s making the point that a president’s actions matter more to voters (specifically black voters in this case) than a president’s race, which isn’t a bad point. (And I guess that’s what the audience is cheering for.)

I’m not a fan of Trump, but I’m also not a fan of taking things out of context.

I mean, he was speaking at the Black Conservative Federation. It’s sorta relevant just given the venue.

That’s really just the cherry on the shit sundae, unnecessarily bringing race into the conversation just for the sake of racism, and you’re being racist against the crowd you’re speaking to. I mean, I’m sure there’s plenty of self-haters amongst that group who see themselves as “one of the good ones” and don’t have a problem with it, but still.

every time I hear the phrase ‘quite part out loud’ I’m reminded that despite everything he still has a chance.

anyone who thinks the quite part survived his presidency is a danger to themselves and their country.

the whole game plan has been sensory overload from day 1 of his presidency, pay attention idiots.

It truly does just boggle the mind. Worst part is he’s got way more than a chance. He’s trying his absolute best to fuck things up six ways to Sunday and it just doesn’t seem to do absolutely anything. It’s kinda wild.

The strongest memory of the Trump presidency was an exhausting series of scandals as he did this that and the other illegal thing. Felt like every single day some new leak or expose would be posted of something incredibly illegal he did, usually within the last 4 weeks before the article

Dunno why you can’t view the video. It’s 13 seconds long, and he says:

“Would you rather have the black president or the white president who got 1.7 Billion off the price … I think they want the white guy”

I don’t know what price he’s referring to (I’m not American).

okay, thanks, I’ll try it on my computer, maybe it’s a platform issue with that site.

I believe the quote and you, I just find that idiot so literally incredible, as in unbelievable, that I have to watch and say these stupid things in person.
