Front is standard, but as you can see sometimes it’s off to the side. Apologists will probably say that Hitler didn’t know how to do it right.
Maybe towards someone or something, like a regular salute?
Or towards Berlin, like how Muslims pray towards Mecca

Without watching the actual video and only seeing the still images of this, I wondered if it was just a picture snapped at the right moment to take out of context. Watching the video shows that it was a VERY intentional gesture.
