      I hate Beyoncé because every time I listen to her music while skateboarding or snowboarding I get too hyped and then I get hurt badly. It’s the Illuminati at work IMO.

      And I just don’t like her music. It’s not her, her wealth, or her ideology and certainly not her skin tone, I just generally dislike most pop music. That includes country and rap/hiphop, though I like many sub-genres (e.g. “rock and roll” from the 70s is better country, folk music, gangster rap from the 80s and 90s, etc).

      If her music was covered by a punk, metal, or ska band, I’d probably like it more. Pop music just feels manufactured and corporate, probably because it is, and a cover by a smaller group feels more passionate, probably because it is.

    Beyoncé claimed to be “bringing back black country” when black country never went anywhere. It’s incredibly insulting to all of the other actual black country singers and artists. Also her album is just bad. Like literally terrible terrible music. It’s clearly just a cash grab.

          Ok, but that doesn’t support the idea that people don’t like the song or more specifically her version.

          She was nominated for song of the year and record of the year for fast car. She won the Grammy for best female pop performance, for that song.

          We love her song so much she won a cma 35 years later.

          This is a super false equivalence.

      They also just don’t have to do that because it was already presumed—contemporary country fans, I should be clear. The type of people who listen to that type of music are generally angry young white guys who like drinking and are in college.

      The country music space has been invaded by the right wing “patriot” crowd.

      There’s some ambiguity in English here.

      I think it’s okay to be neutral on Beyonce. I think it’s okay to prefer silence over her music.

      Some people are weirdly active in their dislike of her. That seems strange to me. Like they have an active, motivating dislike of her.

      (Unless you’re coming at it via “no ultra wealthy”, then I kind of get it, but I feel like people who got wealthy from performing music are lower on my list of problems than other ultra rich)

        Agreed, I had a friend who every time it came up talked about how much he hated Taylor Swift. I kept trying to press him about what he didn’t like about her, like the music, or the tours, or whatever.

        And at the bottom of it he just didn’t like the idea of a woman with wealth and power equal to her peers in the music industry

          Was it the woman part or the wealth part? For me, it’s dislike of the wealth and power of any of the current radio artists and their label execs, regardless of gender.

            One of the… quirks… of humans is that often we’ll feel one thing, but say another. So someone might say “I just don’t like that she’s so rich”, but what’s actually happening under the hood is they don’t like a woman having power. They might not even consciously realize this is happening.

            We all do this to some extent. We feel things, and then reach for explanations. Preferably socially acceptable justifications. Someone might say they don’t like a neighborhood, that it feels tacky and unsafe, but you’d have to do some digging to unearth “because black people live there”.

            At the same time, there are people who know their belief is socially unacceptable, so they’ll intentionally reach to reasons the other people might accept. So you’ll get someone who hates women saying things like “i just don’t think her music is good”, or “she seems bossy”, or other lightly coded phrases.

            This is all really confounding because it’s very difficult to tell the difference between that first category, the second category, and a third category of “legitimately doesn’t like her music.” Sometimes there are signs, like they’ll say “I just don’t like that she has so much money” but then never, ever, comment on similarly rich men. (I’m not saying this is you, specifically. But if it is, maybe give it a think.)

            Also most people are, frankly, fragile little cowards that can’t accept a threat to their ego. Faced with admitting “I did a sexism”, they’d rather lash out and blame everyone else instead of giving it a think and trying to be better.

              And this is a sort of intellectualized version, but then real life, so you need to add in that you may just happen to be acting contrary because you need to eat or got a shit sleep or you’re taking to Steve and fuck that guy and then it’s even harder to parse.

              Wish there was just a print-out sometimes; something that I could check my answers against, see if I’m even on the right track

    Anyone else notice they have a sexual preference in singers and music? I mostly like metal, and there are a few female singers I have liked, though I’m out of touch, having been totally disenfranchised by streaming, and bad with names in general. I tend to wear thin on female vocals. I don’t know if it is the tone, texture, or content.

    I used to put 5 CDs in a turn table boom box in my auto body shop and just let them play while I worked for 12-16 hours straight. It was mostly like Disturbed, Slipknot, Metallica, Alice in Chains, that kind of stuff. I can’t recall any of the female stuff I tried, but I never kept them in the loop for very long. Dunno why really. Guess I’m music-gay like Red team

      I don’t necessarily select music solely for the vocals, but I typically find women’s voices much more beautiful. Andrea bocelli, don mclean, and hozier are notable exceptions, but Amy Winehouse, Adele, or even Beyoncé tend to hit me harder.

        Don Mclean wrote a song about his ex wife who divorced him for abusing her, it’s called The Meanest Girl and the lyrics are laughably childish. I can’t hear American Pie the same after this tbh, and he deserves to have this song stain his reputation just because I had to hear it (and y’know that whole abuse thing) so I post it every time he’s mentioned.

          That’s the dumbest song I’ve ever heard. Straight up, it sounds like something that someone would write about their “ex” in middle school. I hope I can compartmentalize about this, because Vincent is a lovely song, but I feel such vicarious joy for this woman at getting out that it might be worth it to ruin a song.

            Yeah it’s so bad. Like, as in “he’s a terrible person” but also the lyrics are just flat out bad. I know he’s rich as a one hit wonder and all, but I think one of the wildest things is did none of his team say “Yo Don, this song fucking sucks” really?

      I’m kinda the opposite, haha! It’s twenty years old now but back then I got my hands on the Beautiful Voices albums and I discovered some fantastic female vocalists (and a few I already loved). These days my most listened to band is without a doubt Band Maid, and my latest discovery is Castle Rat… It’s not the fact it’s a woman singing, per se, it’s more something to do with lyricism and the contrast with the metal sound. Just like Serj Tankian’s operatic singing vs the mad sound of SoaD, if you will.

        Dude, those compilation disks were amazing, and some even came with DVDs of their music videos. I remember how cringy After Forever videos were, and how enchanting Floor’s voice and interpretation always was. I still listen to VOA frequently, and those albums really helped shape my taste in music.

        If you want a fancy treat, give both Diablo Swing Orchestra and Igorrr a listening to, they are amazing.

      It could just be the particular artist or their style. Most of the mental I like is male vocaled, but that’s just a numbers game. I like quite a few metal bands with women leads, but there are some that just rub me the wrong way, like Unleash the Archers. But give me something like In This Moment or Amaranthe and I’m hooked for hours.

      Maybe that’s just in accordance with the normal style of metal music, where male vocals are expected / more appropriate. I’m surprised to learn that there are female metal singers at all.

      I think women just tend to not be as involved in the types of music I like. I can probably name 10x more metal artists with a male lead than a female lead.

      That said, if there are two great bands, one with a male lead and one with a female lead, I’ll probably prefer the female lead. For example:

      • hard rock/metal - Flyleaf, Evanescence, Halestorm, Paramore
      • punk/ska - The Interruptors, No Doubt, Bikini Kill
      • folksy/indie pop - Of Monsters and Men
      • mainstream rock - Garbage, Cranberries

      But there’s just not enough, so I also listen to a ton of male leads.

        And its fucking CRAZY how that happened. People can argue that “Beyonce isn’t a country singer” all they want, but her song “YA YA” off the Cowboy Carter album (my favey fave off the album) is an incredible song with just her powerful lungs alone, however, the lyrics are shit that White Conservative Country Music People should eat up:

        “My family live and died in America, hm Good ol’ USA, shit (Good ol’ USA) Whole lotta red in that white and blue, huh History can’t be erased, ooh You lookin’ for a new America? (America) Are you tired, workin’ time and a half for half the pay? (Half the pay) Ya-ya (Ooh-ooh, oh-oh) I just pray that we don’t crash, keep my Bible on the dash We gotta keep the faith”

        And in a later verse she talks about staying strapped with a pistol on her hip and a Bible in her hands.

        Like…this is exactly the type of shit these people literally dream about.

    Beyonce is OK, but I’m more of a fan of Rhianna, personally.

    Not a fan of any kind of contemporary country music, though. It’s my personal opinion that country music hasn’t been good since at least the days of John Denver. The stuff they make these days is derivative slop.
