Several years ago PCG reported on the early stages of a project by programmer James Lambert, who really loves the N64 and decided for the hell of it to make a version of Portal that runs on hardware first released in 1996.

Well, Lambert is clearly the type of chap who commits to something and then follows through, because he’s spent the time since then continually adding bits and bobs and now has something which, to my admittedly uneducated eyes, is the most impressive homebrew game I’ve ever seen.

I know demakes are all the rage, but I don’t know if this counts. It’s just… the game, but on console hardware from a decade before Portal. That’s really impressive, especially given just how restrictive some of the limits of the N64 are.

That makes sense. I think demakes have a bit of retro style, but if he’s recreating the game it might be closer to the whole “running doom on any piece of technology” trend. Gameplay wise it’s the same doom, it’s just on an ATM now.

Does someone sell the cartridge? I would like to play it on my N64.

I think the youtube video that’s linked in the article has the rom as a download. The game isn’t finished thought I think.

Now Portal is a game I’d love to see ported to just about every single device on the planet. I absolutely support what is being made here/there/wherever.
