Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday turned to a new strategy in a long-shot bid to prevent the fourth government shutdown in a decade, as time runs short ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline,” Reuters reports.

“Instead, they will prepare four separate spending bills, most of which reflect the deep cuts sought by the party’s right flank. Those are certain to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate, as they are far below spending levels outlined in a deal with Democratic President Joe Biden earlier this year.”

Phrased another way: “Republicans once again hold a gun to the countries head.”

“Let us cut some fingers off!” they demand. “If you don’t, we’ll shoot the country right in the head!”

And, of course, this will all somehow be painted as the Democrats fault.

All McCarthy has to do is negotiate. Not with his party, with the Democrats. That’s it. Do it, you spineless bastard.

If he does that, he loses his job almost instantly. Literally all he cares about is keeping the Speaker job for as long as possible.

Either I’m misremebering things or everyone else is.

If i remember correctly, part of his deal to become Speaker was reducing the number of Reps required to force a vote for a new Speaker to one. Meaning any single member can force votes for a new Speaker. You know if he negotiates with Dems one of the crazies in his own party will force voting on a new Speaker.

Yep, that’s why I said he’d lose his job instantly. Alleged sex trafficker Matt Gaetz has explicitly threatened to submit the motion to vacate the Speakership if McCarthy works with Dems at all.

If he had brains or balls, he could also negotiate with Dems to lend him 6 votes to keep him to the office

That’s just kicking the can down the road.

Sure, he might keep his Speaker job for now, but he’ll get primaried the instant he’s up for reelection.

He’s damned if he does, and damned even quicker if he doesn’t. And even if he cuts a deal with Democrats, GOP crazies will just spend all of their time forcing new votes for Speaker.

What good is that position if he doesn’t have any power and only does what few people tell him to?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday turned to a new strategy in a long-shot bid to prevent the fourth government shutdown in a decade, as time runs short ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline.

They are certain to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate, as they are far below spending levels outlined in a deal with Democratic President Joe Biden earlier this year.

You need the time to fund the government while you pass all the appropriations bills," he said, adding that he thought the main focus of the overall spending fight should be new immigration controls on the border.

The House Rules Committee is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. (1700 GMT) to consider the four bills, which would fund the military, homeland security, agriculture programs, the State Department and other foreign operations for the full fiscal year.

On Thursday, the House blocked a procedural vote on an $886 billion defense spending bill, as five Republicans joined Democrats to capsize it.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, has scheduled a procedural vote on Tuesday evening to advance a stopgap funding bill.
