Social media sites are inundated with police requests for user data and may cooperate even if not legally required to, one legal expert told Insider.

They have to comply with judicial orders and subpoenas. Facebook and Google are evil. Not debating that. But in this case, they are also complying with the law.

Complying with an immoral law is still immoral. I don’t know what would happen if a small fediverse instance would be asked to hand over data. I’d assume they’d be told to pound sand, since most of them are outside the U.S. would be interesting to see it play out

If this would happen to midwest.social I’m not sure what exactly I’d do because the server is in Germany but I run it from the US. I’d probably blow the database away and start over lol.
