It is inspired by games such as Cube World, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft.
You can play single player or multi-player, standalone or use an online server, or even host your own server in a Docker container, or on a Raspberry Pi. Plenty of options!
You start by creating your character, you can collect items for your inventory, you can craft items, there are weapons and combat, you develop skills, can tame creatures, you can trade with merchants, you can socialise, and lost more. There is no single, specific goal or focus, and the idea is to keep exploring and have adventures.
The game is community driven and actually updates quite regularly.
It is clearly no clone of Minecraft. It is fun and adventure!

This looks pretty cool, love that it’s written in Rust and moreover that it runs on Linux. Definitely gonna try this.
oh, this looks sick! totally going to see if i can make my friends play with me lol
Not very active but they have an official community on Lemmy: https://lemmy.ml/c/veloren
Wow did not know that
I just downloaded and messed around and I think I have something new to sink my hours into. This is awesome!
I’ve seen discussion of Veloren but I never knew it was open source. Roped some friends into trying it and we’re impressed by how much more content it already has compared to Cube World.
And it seems to be updating very regularly too…
Any word on Steam Deck compatibility?
I don’t have a steam deck but it is linux native so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get running on steam deck
It currently needs to be run via xwayland or x11 due to some bug and controller input is not great. Should be doable with the touch input on the SD though. There were some people on the chat reporting that it can be made to work on the SD and that it runs well.
Awesome! I will check it out!
Woah this looks really neat. I’ll have to try this out. How are the controls?
Keyboard and mouse. Controller sort of works but the inventory etc needs an overhaul to work with controllers.
Gotcha. I’ll test it out on my steam deck and see if I can find something usable as far as mapping custom controls
I’ve been using keyboard and mouse but you can remap them.
Good to know! I may give it a try on steam deck since they have a native Linux build.
Oo this looks super interesting, I’m gonna download it today and try it out.
This looks like heaps of fun!
I love Veloren! Development is very active, so you get to see changes happen quickly.
Thanks for sharing! This looks delightful
It would be so fun if wé could make a beehaw veloren server
Veloren is wonderful. My 6 year old and I play it sometimes. It’s still VERY early in development, but completely playable and fun, as long as you’re willing to go looking.
Thanks for reminding me of the game that was never finished. -_-
Voxel Quest is (let’s be honest!) probably more of a research project than a game. It is an attempt to explore new areas in rendering, procedural generation, simulation, and AI. At this point, it is entirely free and I work on it as a hobby in my spare time. -https://www.voxelquest.com
This one looks like fun, though. I’ll add it to the backlog.
I liked the cool of cube world really unfortunate that as far as i can tell it didnt go in a good direction i hope this succeeds
