A salmonella outbreak tied to tainted cantaloupe has now killed eight people — three in the U.S. and five in Canada, health officials reported Thursday.
Dozens more illnesses were reported by both countries. In the U.S., at least 230 people have been ill in 38 states and 96 have been hospitalized since mid-November, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The tainted cantaloupe was also shipped to Canada, where 129 cases have been reported, including 44 hospitalizations, health officials reported.
Many of the people who fell ill reported eating pre-cut cantaloupe in clamshell packages and trays sold in stores. Consumers should not buy, eat or serve cantaloupe, if they don’t know the source, the CDC said.

Honeydew is garbage fruit.
I know this is unpopular, but honeydew is superior.
Honeydew gang reporting in 🍈
Weirdly I love honeydew as a flavor (like bubble tea) but prefer cantaloupe as a fruit (cantaloupe flavored things just sounds wrong).
Based
You’re not eating ripe honeydew
If we’re going to call out honeydew, can we at least address the blatant disinformation campaign apples have been on for the past few decades?
You’re just eating shit apples? Certain varieties are like sex in your mouth
Listen, Fig, you stay out of this.
You just need to find your variety. I’m a bit of a basic bitch, I’m into Honeycrisp or a nice golden delicious.
nope, that’s cantaloupe. honeydew doesnt kill people
Depends how hard you throw it

Hardly anyone eats it so it’s less likely to get anyone sick
Yet…
Suddenly I’m happy that McDonalds ran out of their packaged cantaloupe that they offered me instead of apple slices.
However, my family is never buying presliced produce ever again.
Wait what country are you in? Your McDonalds has packaged Canteloupe?? Thats so awesome
This is getting a surprising amount of attention.

We’ve all seen much more dangerous things get little or no coverage.
Cantaloupe tried to warn you away with its nasty taste, but somehow people can’t take a hint.
Always knew these trash melons (cantaloupe, musk melon, honeydew, etc) would come back to bite us in the ass.
The only reason this has only affected eight people is because only eight people in the world have ever bought those off the shelves.

That’s what you get for eating that gross ass fruit.
In all seriousness, that does suck tho… fuck cantaloupes.
I hated cantaloupe until I tried a locally grown one off the vine, and holy shit. I get it. I understand what that god-awful unripe bitter orange Play-Doh is trying to be. And it’s amazing.
Given the difference between store bought tomatoes vs locally grown… You might be on to something here.
There are so many foods that people claim not to like when they just haven’t had a good one.
Except tomatoes. There are no good tomatoes. I’ve checked.
I felt this way about tomatoes for decades. Then my tastes changed as i got older, and I appreciate cooking with tomatoes more.
That said, age also brought histamine intolerance, which makes tomatoes once again off my menu 😩
Or maybe i used to hate tomatoes because of histamine load. Who knows. I’m rambling.
Canteloupe and prosciutto is amazing.
It’s good if you know how to pick ripe ones.
Of course it’s terrible people die from this. of course. of course.
But maybe if you’re too fucking lazy to cut up your own melon …
…you deserve to die? Seriously?
