If something is free, then you are the product.” It costs them money to provide public Wi-Fi, what are they getting out of it if they’re not mining data from the users?

Checking your bank account on public wifi is perfectly safe thanks to TLS.
There’s more to good opsec than encrypted transport, but for most people this is probably true. Maybe also avoid being in camera view especially without MFA.
