I can’t get too upset with this. Invoking the Emergencies Act is a major thing, and not well tested in the courts. But it was also a necessary move at the time. All the local authorities were failing to act appropriately and a situation which was allowed to get out of control was promptly brought back into control via it’s use. It’s unfortunate it all came to this, but knowing that certain members of the opposition would try to make as much hay of this as they could, I can understand wanting to make one’s case bulletproof.
And it’s not just about making a case.
Sometimes you want to consult a lawyer to make you’re following the law properly.
And yeah invoking the EA is a big deal and you want to make sure you dot the i’s and cross the t’s on something like that.
If he didn’t hire lawyers in the process of invoking Emergencies Act, Trudeau would be accused of acting like a lawless dictator anyway.
Lawyers aren’t cheap even in routine legal tasks, so in rarely trodden legal territory, of course it’s going to cost a pretty penny.
Completely agree. Him having lawyers to help him make the legal choice is always the better option, even if it costs additional taxpayer dollars.
Furthermore, even though the government already has lawyers on staff, they don’t have enough to deal with such a monumental task. Also, private lawyers have no reason to sugarcoat their answers, they can give a much more frank assessment.
